Systems and methods for the treatment of oral and systemic maladies in animals using electrical current
Systems and methods for the concurrent treatment of multiple oral diseases and defects while promoting general oral hygiene utilizing electricity are provided for non-human animals. Electrodes are used to deliver an electrical current to the gingival tissues of a mouth in order to achieve a number of therapeutic, prophylactic, and regenerative benefits. These benefits include killing oral microbes, increasing oral vasodilation, reducing oral biofilm, improving oral blood circulation, reversing oral bone resorption, promoting oral osteogenesis, treating gum recession, and fostering gingival regeneration. Other benefits include the treatment of gingivitis, periodontitis, and oral malodor, and other systemic diseases correlated with oral pathogens.
Oral Care Process
An oral care process which includes initiating a first operational sequence which includes generating an electric potential between a first sacrificial electrode and a second sacrificial electrode, the electric potential in the first operational sequence beginning with one of a first polarity and a second polarity, stopping the first operational sequence, and commencing a second operational sequence which includes generating the electric potential between the first sacrificial electrode and the second sacrificial electrode. The electric potential in the second operational sequence may begin with the other of the first polarity and the second polarity. The electric potential may be alternated between the first polarity and the second polarity at predetermined intervals during at least one of the first operational sequence and the second operational sequence.
SLEEP APNEA THERAPY
A system for sleep apnea treatment includes an implantable medical device (IMD) coupled to a first lead and a second lead, wherein the IMD comprises a processor and stimulation circuitry, and wherein the processor is configured to cause the stimulation circuitry of IMD to: transmit a first stimulation signal to the first lead to stimulate at least one of an ansa cervicalis, a glossopharyngeal nerve, tensor veli, levator veli, and digastric anterior of a patient, and transmit a second stimulation signal to the second lead to stimulate at least one a hypoglossal nerve or a phrenic nerve of the patient.
IMPLANTABLE ELECTRODES WITH REMOTE POWER DELIVERY FOR TREATING SLEEP APNEA, AND ASSOCIATED SYSTEMS AND METHODS
Implantable electrodes with power delivery wearable for treating sleep apnea, and associated systems and methods are disclosed herein. A representative system includes non-implantable signal generator worn by the patient and having an antenna that directs a mid-field RF power signal to an implanted electrode. The implanted electrode in turn directs a lower frequency signal to a neural target, for example, the patient's hypoglossal nerve. Representative signal generators can have the form of a mouthpiece, a collar or other wearable, and/or a skin-mounted patch.
Oral care device
An oral care device for placement in the oral cavity. The oral care device may include a support component, a piezoelectric component, and/or a therapeutic element. The support component is configured for placement between one or more maxillary teeth and one or more mandibular teeth. The piezoelectric element is configured to generate an electrical current from relative movement of the maxillary teeth and the mandibular teeth. The therapeutic element is configured to release a therapeutic composition into the oral cavity at least in part in response to receiving the electrical signal. The device may include the piezoelectric component, the therapeutic element, or both.
OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA PATIENT PROGRAMMER FOR IMPLANTABLE DEVICES
An implantable neurostimulator system including an electrical lead having formed thereon a pair of bipolar electrodes, the electrical lead is configured for placement of the pair of bipolar electrodes proximate protrusor muscles of a patient. The system also includes a pulse generator electrically connected to the electrical lead and configured to deliver electrical energy to the pair of bipolar electrodes, the pulse generator having mounted therein a sensor configured to detect one or more physiological parameters, a memory, a control circuit, and a telemetry circuit. The system also including a communications telemetry module (CTM) in communication with the telemetry circuit and configured to receive a data collected by the sensor and data related to delivery of electrical energy to the bipolar electrodes, and an external programmer in communication with the CTM and configured to display a user interface the data collected by the sensor and data related to delivery of electrical energy to the bipolar electrodes.
