Electrowetting lenses having oleophobic surfaces

An eye-implantable electrowetting lens can be operated to control an overall optical power of an eye in which the device is implanted. A lens chamber of the electrowetting lens contains first and second fluids that are immiscible with each other and have different refractive indexes. By applying a voltage to electrodes of the lens, the optical power of the lens can be controlled by affecting the geometry of the interface between the fluids. To prevent fouling the surface due to folding or other manipulation of the lens during the insertion process, one or more surfaces within the lens chamber is highly underwater oleophobic.

HYDROPHILICITY ALTERATION SYSTEM AND METHOD
20210369444 · 2021-12-02 ·

A system/method allowing hydrophilicity alteration of a polymeric material (PM) is disclosed. The PM hydrophilicity alteration changes the PM characteristics by decreasing the PM refractive index, increasing the PM electrical conductivity, and increasing the PM weight. The system/method incorporates a laser radiation source that generates tightly focused laser pulses within a three-dimensional portion of the PM to affect these changes in PM properties. The system/method may be applied to the formation of customized intraocular lenses comprising material (PLM) wherein the lens created using the system/method is surgically positioned within the eye of the patient. The implanted lens refractive index may then be optionally altered in situ with laser pulses to change the optical properties of the implanted lens and thus achieve optimal corrected patient vision. This system/method permits numerous in situ modifications of an implanted lens as the patient's vision changes with age.

Adjustable ophthalmic devices, systems including adjustable ophthalmic devices, and methods of adjusting an optical power of an ophthalmic device are described. In an embodiment, the ophthalmic devices include a body including an inner surface defining an aperture through the body, wherein the inner surface includes a feature selected from a sharp surface feature, a layer on at least a portion of the inner surface having a surface energy different than a surface energy of the inner surface, and a combination thereof. In an embodiment, the ophthalmic device includes two immiscible liquids disposed in the aperture defining a meniscus, wherein a curvature of the meniscus is defined at least in part by a position of an interface between the layer and the inner surface, a position of the sharp surface feature, or combination thereof.

Photo-responsive shape changing polymer composition for colored optical lens

Photo-responsive shape changing polymer compositions including photoinitiators that absorb light in the range about 400 nm to about 700 nm, a cross-linked polymer matrix and a polymerizable composition. Photopolymerization of the polymerizable composition sorbed in the cross-linked polymer matrix results in the shape change which manifests in the change in the refractive properties of the composition. The light dose required to effect the shape change; lock-in dose and the photobleaching dose are determined by the choice of the photoinitiator, electron donor and the hydrogen donor. These compositions are useful in the fabrication of coloured lenses, especially intraocular lenses.
