Methods for treating post-traumatic stress disorder in patients via renal neuromodulation

Methods for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or for reducing a risk associated with developing PTSD in patients via therapeutic renal neuromodulation and associated systems are disclosed herein. Sympathetic nerve activity can contribute to several cellular and physiological conditions associated with PTSD as well as an increased risk of developing PTSD following a traumatic event. One aspect of the present technology is directed to methods for improving a patient's calculated risk score corresponding to a PTSD status in the patient. Other aspects are directed to reducing a likelihood of developing PTSD in patients presenting one or more PTSD risk factors. Renal sympathetic nerve activity can be attenuated to improve a patient's PTSD status or risk of developing PTSD. The attenuation can be achieved, for example, using an intravascularly positioned catheter carrying a therapeutic assembly configured to use, e.g., electrically-induced, thermally-induced, and/or chemically-induced approaches to modulate the renal sympathetic nerve.

ADAPTIVE DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION USING HOMEOSTATIC WINDOW

Techniques are disclosed for defining a homeostatic window for controlling delivery of electrical stimulation therapy to a patient. In one example, a method includes generating and delivering electrical stimulation therapy to tissue of a patient via electrodes. Further, the method includes adjusting a level of a parameter of the electrical stimulation therapy such that a signal of the patient is not less than a lower bound and not greater than an upper bound. The lower bound is determined to be the magnitude of the signal while receiving electrical stimulation therapy sufficient to reduce one or more symptoms of a disease while the patient was receiving medication for reduction of the one or more symptoms. Further, the upper bound is determined to be the magnitude of the signal while receiving electrical stimulation therapy sufficient to reduce the one or more symptoms when the patient was not receiving the medication.

Devices and methods for manipulating devices such as micro-scale devices are provided. The devices can include a tether of various materials surrounded by a stiff body. The tether interfaces with microscale devices to draw them against the stiff body, holding the microscale devices in a locked position for insertion into or extraction out of tissue. The tensional hook and stiff body are configurable in a multitude of positions and geometries to provide increased engagement. Such configurations allow for a range of implantation and extraction surgical procedures for the device within research and clinical settings.

Systems and techniques are disclosed to generate programming parameters and modifications during closed-loop adjustment of an implantable neurostimulation device treatment programming, through the identification and application of weights determined from user input indications and rankings of therapy objectives. In an example, a system to generate programming values of a neurostimulation device performs operations that: obtains human input which indicates multiple therapy objectives for neurostimulation treatment of a human patient; operates a model (such as an artificial intelligence model) to determine parameter outputs for programming of the neurostimulation device; identifies weights, based on the therapy objectives, usable in the model; produces a composite output from the model, by applying the identified weights to a combination of the parameter outputs of the programming model; and the resulting composite output provides neurostimulation device programming values for neurostimulation treatment designed to address the therapy objectives.

Systems and methods for respiratory-gated nerve stimulation

Systems and methods are provided for neurostimulation timed relative to respiratory activity. Neurostimulation may be delivered to the spinal cord, the vagus nerve, and/or branches of the vagus nerve to provide therapeutic outcomes by controlling or adjusting stimulation based on pulmonary activity. In particular, the systems and methods use a detecting device to detect respiratory activity over time. Specific points in the respiratory signal are identified where central autonomic nuclei may be more receptive to afferent input and a stimulator is instructed to provide neurostimulation to at least one auricular branch of a vagus nerve, or to a cervical branch of the vagus nerve, or to a spinal cord of the subject. In this regard, the neurostimulation is advantageously correlated to the detected respiratory activity providing improved therapeutic outcomes.
