Disclosed herein are membranes comprising: porous substrate; and two or more graphene oxide (GO) sheets disposed on the porous substrate, each GO layer comprising a plurality of GO flakes, each GO flake comprising a planar graphene structure with oxygen moieties extending therefrom, wherein the membrane, when a pressure from 10 bar to 50 bar of transmembrane pressure is applied from 1 hour to 48 hours, has an aqueous flux wherein the aqueous flux changes by 5% or less while the pressure is applied. The membranes can also include an intercalating agent disposed between the two or more GO sheets, the intercalating agent interacting with each GO sheet, wherein the intercalating agent provides a non-covalent stabilization of the two or more GO sheets. Also disclosed herein are methods of making and using the same and systems for implementing the same.

Described herein is a method for preparing a flavor composition, typically a dehydrated and de-alcoholized flavor composition, by decreasing or removing water and ethanol from a strong alcoholic flavor composition. The method includes the steps of treating the strong alcoholic flavor composition by a dehydration process and dealcoholization process. Also described herein are flavor compositions obtainable by this method, flavored consumer products including the same and methods and uses thereof.

There is provided a multi-layered membrane comprising a top layer, a bottom layer, and a spacer layer; wherein said spacer layer is interposed between said top layer and said bottom layer; wherein said top layer, said bottom layer and said spacer layer are each independently composed of one or more selective layers, each selective layer comprising a 2D material; wherein said spacer layer comprises at least one channel for receiving a fluid; wherein said bottom layer comprises a hole with an area in the range of 1 μm.sup.2 to 1 mm.sup.2; and wherein said hole is capable of being in fluid communication with said at least one channels of said spacer layer.

There is also provided a method to synthesize the top layer of a multi-layered membrane as disclosed herein, methods for separating a plurality of ions or molecules in a fluid stream, a device comprising a multi-layered membrane as disclosed herein, and use of the method or the device as disclosed herein in osmotic power generation.

Hydrogen purification devices

Hydrogen purification devices and their components are disclosed. In some embodiments, the devices may include at least one foil-microscreen assembly disposed between and secured to first and second end frames. The at least one foil-microscreen assembly may include at least one hydrogen-selective membrane and at least one microscreen structure including a non-porous planar sheet having a plurality of apertures forming a plurality of fluid passages. The planar sheet may include generally opposed planar surfaces configured to provide support to the permeate side. The plurality of fluid passages may extend between the opposed surfaces. The at least one hydrogen-selective membrane may be metallurgically bonded to the at least one microscreen structure. In some embodiments, the devices may include a permeate frame having at least one membrane support structure that spans at least a substantial portion of an open region and that is configured to support at least one foil-microscreen assembly.

Carbon molecular sieve membranes containing a group 13 metal and method to make them

A carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membrane having improved separation characteristics for separating olefins from their corresponding paraffins is comprised of carbon with at most trace amounts of sulfur and a group 13 metal. The CMS membrane may be made by pyrolyzing a precursor polymer devoid of sulfur in which the precursor polymer has had a group 13 metal incorporated into it, wherein the metal is in a reduced state. The pyrolyzing for the precursor having the group 13 metal incorporated into it is performed in a nonoxidizing atmosphere and at a heating rate and temperature such that the metal in a reduced state (e.g., covalently bonded to carbon or nitrogen or in the metal state).

Nanoporous membranes for fast diffusion of ions and small molecules

A product includes a nanoporous membrane having a plurality of carbon nanotubes and a fill material in interstitial spaces between the carbon nanotubes for limiting or preventing fluidic transfer between opposite sides of the nanoporous membrane except through interiors of the carbon nanotubes. The longitudinal axes of the carbon nanotubes are substantially parallel, an average inner diameter of the carbon nanotubes is about 20 nanometers or less, and both ends of at least some of the carbon nanotubes are open. Moreover, the fill material is impermeable or having an average porosity that is less than the average inner diameter of the carbon nanotubes.

Disclosed herein are multi-layer structures comprising a first composite layer disposed over a second composite layer, wherein the first composite layer contains a first active material dispersed in a first polymer containing an elastomeric polymer and the second composite layer contains a second polymer which may have a second active material dispersed therein, wherein the first active material chemically or physically interacts with at least one toxic chemical and is selected from the group consisting of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), metal oxides, metal hydroxides, zeolites, and combinations thereof, and wherein the active material and the second active material (if present) are the same as or different from each other, and the first polymer and second polymer are the same as or different from each other, subject to the proviso that the first composite layer and the second composite layer compositionally differ from each other in at least one respect.

Method of preparation of conductive polymer/carbon nanotube composite nanofiltration membrane and the use thereof

A method for preparation of conductive polymer/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite nanofiltration (NF) membrane and the use thereof. This conductive polymer/CNT composite NF membrane is obtained by polymerizing conductive polymer into a CNT membrane and then in-situ cross-linking with glutaraldehyde under acidic condition. The synthetic method for the conductive polymer/CNT composite NF membrane is simple and has no need of expensive equipment. The prepared membrane has controllable membrane structure and possesses superior electrical conductivity and electrochemical stability. The membrane can couple with electrochemistry for electrically assisted filtration. With the electrical assistance, the membrane can achieve improved ion rejection performance while retaining high permeability by enhancement of membrane surface charge density, which alleviates the permeability-selectivity trade-off. Furthermore, the electrically assisted NF membrane filtration can also enhance the removal for small molecular organic pollutants.
