A feed conduit extends between the water basin and the sidestream treatment device for feeding water from the water basin to the sidestream and a return conduit extends from the sidestream treatment device to the water basin for returning at least a part of the water to the water basin.

Paper capillary lateral flow fluid filter for bacterial and nanometer sized particle contamination

The present invention provides a system and methods for filtering fluid using filter papers, stationary paper, cloth sheets or any other porous material. In one embodiment, the present invention uses the lateral flow direction along the porous sheets, instead of conventional vertical flow direction, for the removal of bacteria and particle contamination in the range from nanometers to millimeters. The pore sizes in the filter media along the lateral direction are modulated by controlling the compression of the porous sheets, instead of conventionally designing filters with different pore sizes. The lateral flow fluid filter system is scalable simply by increasing the feed area, feed length, and the number of porous sheets. The invention presents a universal fluid filtration system for wide range of applications such as water purification, food processing, chemical industry, oil and gas industry, and biological applications.

A method for manufacturing wastewater filtration plates uses a flowable composition including pre-ceramic raw material. The flowable composition is extruded to form a thin plate preform. Carbon-containing material is included in the flowable composition and/or added to the surface of the thin plate perform during or after extrusion thereof. The carbon-containing material is preformed carbon filaments or carbon-fiber precursor material. The thin plate preform is subjected to elevated temperatures to convert the pre-ceramic raw material into porous ceramic with carbon filaments embedded therein or disposed on the surface of the finished ceramic plate.

Self-regenerating biofilter

The present invention is a self-regenerating biofilter. The biofilter tank receives untreated water through an intake inlet, filters it through a filtration mass and expels purified water through an output outlet. The filtration mass includes gravel and activated carbon layers separated by a mesh screen. A compressed air line is located below the mesh screen. Periodically, the biofilter self-cleans by opening a flush valve that expels a flush water stream carrying debris. The biofilter self-regenerates by periodically stopping filtration for a time, allowing biological matter left on the activated carbon to degrade into biomass. Periodically, the biofilter removes and flushes out biomass by application of water or a combination of air and water.
