A method of clamping a first cutting insert or an adaptor to a holder. Either the holder includes two insert pockets configured for machining in two different orthogonal directions or the holder includes a single adaptor pocket configured for holding the adaptor in two different orthogonal directions. The method includes the steps of choosing one of two orthogonal directions for machining and securing either the first cutting insert to an appropriate one of the two pockets or securing the adaptor to the adaptor pocket for machining in the chosen orthogonal direction.

A holder provided for mounting of a lathe cutter includes a carrier, a first joint seat, a second joint seat, a limit rod and a clamp member. The first and second joint seats are disposed on a first and second base of the carrier respectively. The lathe cutter is mounted between the first and second joint seats. The limit rod is inserted into a through hole of the lathe cutter, and a first and second ends of the limit rod are coupled to the first and second joint seats respectively. The clamp member is disposed on the limit rod. The clamp member and the second joint seat are provided to clamp the lathe cutter to separate the lathe cutter from the first and second bases.

A tool holder includes a tool shank and a tool head connected to the tool shank. The tool head has a rear surface. An insert seat or a blade pocket is partially formed on both the tool head and the tool shank, and extends rearwardly of the tool head's rear surface. Adjacent to at least a portion of a shank side surface there is a reinforcement portion connecting the shank side surface and the tool head.

The assembly also includes a diamond crystal secured to an end of the cylindrical pin. The diamond crystal has a curved perimeter that defines a working section, which contacts a workpiece during operation of the machining tool. The shank is adapted to allow rotation of the cylindrical pin within the cylindrical slot to modify the working section.
