A rotary tool designed as a modular drill, extending in an axial direction along an axis of rotation. It comprises two coupling parts: a carrier; and a cutting head that is attached to the carrier so as to be exchangeable. The carrier includes pin receiving means, into which a coupling pin of the cutting head is introduced in a clamping manner and so as to be reversibly exchangeable. The pin receiving means and the coupling pin have torque sections and clamping sections that correspond to one another and are oriented parallel to the axis of rotation. In addition, to prevent axial pull-out, stop surfaces are provided on the pin receiving means and on the coupling pin, the stop surfaces being effective in an axial direction and corresponding to one another. These stop surfaces preferably extend horizontally and therefore perpendicular to the axis of rotation.

MODULAR ROTARY CUTTING TOOL

A modular rotary cutting tool includes a cutting head for insertion into a support. The cutting head has a coupling pin having torque surfaces and clamping surfaces formed on its outer peripheral surface. The coupling pin is divided into a front pin part and a rear pin part. The front pin part is defined by a circumferential groove. Stop surfaces for an axial pullout prevention are formed between the front pin part and the rear pin part. The torque surfaces and the clamping surfaces are arranged in different pin parts. For example, the clamping surfaces are preferably formed on the front pin part and the torque surfaces are preferably formed on the rear pin part. The clamping surfaces taper radially inward in a direction of the front cutting part at an angle of inclination, 2, with respect to the axis of rotation. Other variants and embodiments are broadly contemplated herein.

A front-loaded, side-activated modular drill includes a shank and a replaceable cutting insert installed on and engaging the tool shank. The shank has a pocket for supporting the cutting insert when the cutting insert is installed within the pocket. The pocket includes a first centering wall having an aperture with internal threads formed with a first pitch and a second centering wall having an aperture with a first portion with internal threads formed with a second, different pitch. A first member is threaded into the aperture of the first centering wall, and a second member is threaded into the second centering wall. The first member is threaded into the second member. The cutting insert has an opening in a trailing end for allowing the first member to pass therethrough. Rotation of the first member causes the centering walls to elastically deform and move relative to each other.

A rotary tool comprising two coupling parts, namely a carrier and a cutting head in a front end surface. The carrier comprises a pin receptacle into which a coupling pin of the cutting head is inserted. In order to prevent pulling-out in an axial direction, stop surfaces are provided on the pin receptacle and on the coupling pin, said stop surfaces being effective in an axial direction. For a design that is as simple as possible, in particular with regard to grinding, each stop surface of the coupling pin is adjoined by a lateral surface which freely tapers off in the direction toward the end surface as viewed in the axial direction. In particular, the lateral surface constitutes a torque surface.

At least one coolant channel is formed, which comprises a first partial channel and a second partial channel, which adjoins the first partial channel, wherein the first partial channel proceeds within the carrier up to an outlet opening, wherein the second partial channel proceeds within the cutting insert from an inlet opening up to a coolant outlet, wherein the outlet opening and the inlet opening form an interface for transferring coolant from the carrier to the cutting insert. The outlet opening is arranged in one of the lateral surfaces and the inlet opening is arranged in one of the contact surfaces.
