The invention relates to a machine tool as well as to a method for operating the machine tool. The machine tool comprises a workpiece carrier (20) that can be incrementally rotated about an incremental advance axis (22) and has several carrier sides (25). A first workpiece chuck unit (26) for holding a workpiece in a first position (P1) and a second workpiece chuck unit (27) for holding a workpiece in a second position (P2) are arranged on each carrier side (25). In each angular position or incremental advance position of the workpiece carrier (20), one carrier side (25) is in a loading station (30), one carrier side (25) is in an unloading station 31, and the respectively other carrier sides (25) are in respectively one work station (32). A workpiece changing device (34) is provided, said device moving a partially machined workpiece (16a) out of the first position (P1) in the unloading station (31) into the second position (P2) in the loading station. The position change of the partially machined workpiece (16a) preferably also takes place during the incremental advance movement of the workpiece carrier (20). Preferably, the partially machined workpiece (16a) can be turned in doing so.

In an embodiment, a machine tool includes two fixed modules and two movable modules each of which having a main spindle, a headstock, and a tool post being integrally formed, and a bed on which these are installed. The movable modules are provided on the bed to be movable in the Y-axis direction, the fixed modules are fixed on the bed on the opposite sides of the these movable modules, and a recess is provided next to the fixed module, the recess being formed by cutting out the bed. The movable modules are movable such that the axis lines of the main spindles of the movable modules are aligned with the axis line of the main spindle of the fixed module or the fixed module. The movable module is movable to the opposite position of the recess.

The present application concerns a holder system for mounting and aligning a machining unit (30) to a machine (20), preferably to a rotary transfer machine. The holder system comprises a holder (1) with a first part (2) being mountable on a machine (20) or being part of a machine (20) as well as a second part (3) which is releasably coupled to said first part (2) in a defined first position. Said second part (3) is coupled to a third part (4), said third part including third coupling means (7) for coupling said third part (4) with a machining unit (30). Positioning means (5, 6) are located between said second part (3) and said third part (4) to allow moving said third part (4) relative to said second part (3) in at least one spatial direction. Further, the holder system comprises at least one alignment station, said alignment station comprising first coupling means for releasably coupling the second part (3) of the holder (1) to said alignment station in said first defined position and at least one measuring device arranged on said alignment station, said measuring device configured to measure the position of said third part (4) or of a machining unit (30) coupled to said third part (4) relative to the second part (3).
