A computerized method and apparatus for high pressure grit or sand blasting comprises an upright cabinet through which work pieces, supported by a roller conveyor, can be disposed for blasting. An elongated actuator assembly horizontally extending across the enclosure interior comprises a pair of rigid, spaced-apart, rails upon which a displaceable carriage can move. The carriage supports a sand blasting head and nozzle. An internal tape within the actuator assembly moves the carriage. Tape condition is monitored by software in response to a magnetic sender driven by the tape idler pulley and an adjacent Hall effect sensor that picks up timed pulses. The actuator assembly is braced by buffer wheel assemblies at each end, in contact with vertical guide rails at each cabinet interior end. The hose-fed sand blasting head secured to the carriage directs sand or towards a target work piece be processed. The actuator assembly is vertically displaceable via cables controlled by an overhead servo motor, so that the sand blasting nozzle may be displaced in both horizontal and vertical. A programmable logic controller, armed with suitable software, provides operator menus for initiating various steps used in setup options, executing blast functions, moving the carriage blasting.

SYSTEM AND APARARATUS FOR COST EFFECTIVE AUTOMATED PREPARATION AND COATING FOR LARGE SURFACES

An apparatus and method of preparing and coating a large structure such as a ship's hull while in a dry dock wherein a plurality of spray guns disposed in an array are positioned by a robotic arm in a spaced relationship along the surface to be treated so that their spray patterns overlap. The array of spray guns is traversed downwardly and thus painting a strip whereupon the spray guns are secured, move horizontally and then are activated to be moved upwardly until another strip adjacent to and overlapping the first strip is painted. These steps are repeated until the surface area is substantially entirely painted. A shroud is provided for collecting paint oversprays and other excess paint is mounted in the array assemblage. An auxiliary spray gun may be positioned and its spray pattern adjusted to apply paint to area which were missed by the original spray pattern emanating from the array of spray guns. Travel of the system along the work surface is accomplished by a reference track, which may be virtual or actual along which an unmanned platform travels. An articulated computer controlled arm is carried by the unmanned platform which in turn carries the assemblage. Other tools may be selectively operatively connected to the arm for cleaning the hull before a coating is applied thereto.

An enclosed booth is provided with a low pressure, high volume air pump that outputs a stream of air for sandblast cleaning. A venturi nozzle having a venturi restriction at the end is positioned at the distal end of a first flexible tube. A second flexible tube has an outlet positioned adjacent to the venturi restriction which therefore creates a vacuum to pull sand media from the reservoir into the airflow and eject it out of the outlet nozzle of the first hose. This provides a low pressure stream of sandblast media for cleaning various parts. A reservoir is positioned at the bottom of the booth which is filled with the sandblast media. After the sandblasting media is output from the outlet nozzle, it falls through a substrate having apertures therein and enters the reservoir again.

The recycling unit is the technology for the continuously controlled process of recycling and drying screened abrasive during which the intensity of batching of the abrasive is regulated according to the temperature in the drying oven. The control system continuously measures the current temperature and on the basis of this data it decides on switching the heating elements on or off or turning the batching process on or off; this control is based on the temperature hysteresis and on changing the intensity of batching of abrasive, which is subject to switching the heating elements or turning the batching process on or off.
