Ceramic tools

A tool for use in forming molded articles, comprising a tool body formed of a ceramic material preferably porous with a porosity of between 40% and 60% and in the form of a foam. The tool body is profiled to define the mold surface(s) of the tool. The outer surface of the tool can be sealed with epoxy sealant to provide the mold surface(s) of the tool. An elastomeric layer can be applied to the surface(s) of the tool body and a resinous material, such as a fiber reinforced material, applied to the elastomeric layer, wherein the elastomeric layer inhibits the movement of resin from the resinous layer into the porous ceramic body, and the resinous layer defines the mold surface.

Method and system for forming a self-sealing volume using a breather system

A fabric and elastomeric material (referred to as a fabric trilayer) combined with a sealant may be applied in such a fashion so as to eliminate or minimize air entrapment in an elastomeric composite structure that forms a seal-sealing volume. The performance of the self-sealing volume is dramatically improved with this minimizing of air entrapment. Surprisingly and unexpectedly, this construction approach may be accomplished without significantly adding to the weight or thickness of the volume and without affecting the outer dimension of the self-sealing volume. Thus, a method and system for forming a self-sealing volume are described. The system includes an elastomeric composite structure comprising at least one layer of an elastomeric material derived from a neat (no solvent) elastomeric material that does not substantially react at room temperature.

A process for fabricating an optical device includes injecting (301) optical silicone into a mold cavity formed by two or more mutually matching mold-elements, curing (302) the optical silicone contained by the mold cavity, and separating (303) the mold-elements from the optical device constituted by the optical silicone. The reversible elasticity of the optical silicone after the curing phase is utilized in the process so that at least one of the mold-elements has counterdraft which causes a reversible deformation in the optical device when the mold-element is separated from the optical device. As the counterdraft is allowable, the shape of the optical device as well as the dividing joints between the mold-elements can be designed more freely. For example, walls of the mold cavity corresponding to optically active surfaces of the optical device can be arranged to be free from dividing joints between the mold-elements.

Injection mold with surface coating of the inner surface

A blow mold for PET bottles has the inner surface which contacts the hot PET during the blowing operation, coated with a layer of ceramic material having a nanometric thickness, of which at least one thickness layer is AI.sub.2O.sub.3 and/or TiO2 deposited by ALD technique. Due to this technique, the PET preforms are subject to less friction during the contact with the interior of the mold.
