The method comprises: modifying regions of a material within the label using light, wherein the modifying comprises using light of a first polarisation state to provide photo-induced optically active regions of a first type having a first optical activity state which is characteristic of having been formed by light of the first polarisation state, in order to encode covert information in the label using the locations of the first type of light-modified regions within the spatial arrangement of the label.

A method and system for writing a label (defined within a predetermined region of the sample 110), the label displaying a visible layout of light-modified regions in a predetermined spatial arrangement. The method comprises: modifying regions of a material within the label using light, wherein the modifying comprises using light of a first polarisation state to provide photo-induced optically active regions of a first type having a first optical activity state which is characteristic of having been formed by light of the first polarisation state, in order to encode covert information in the label using the locations of the first type of light-modified regions within the spatial arrangement of the label.

A printing management apparatus includes: a receiving unit that receives order information about a printed material and print data of the printed material; a generating unit that generates bar code information about a bar code assigned to each page of the printed material based on the order information; an output unit that outputs the print data and the bar code information to a printer for executing processing including printing of the printed material; an acquiring unit that, in response to a failure occurring in the processing executed by the printer on a failure page, acquires the bar code information about the bar code assigned to the failure page; and a controller that controls the output unit so that the output unit outputs the bar code information about the failure page and reprint data of a reprinted material including the failure page to the printer.

A printing management apparatus includes: a receiving unit that receives order information about a printed material and print data of the printed material; a generating unit that generates bar code information about a bar code assigned to each page of the printed material based on the order information; an output unit that outputs the print data and the bar code information to a printer for executing processing including printing of the printed material; an acquiring unit that, in response to a failure occurring in the processing executed by the printer on a failure page, acquires the bar code information about the bar code assigned to the failure page; and a controller that controls the output unit so that the output unit outputs the bar code information about the failure page and reprint data of a reprinted material including the failure page to the printer.

A printing apparatus includes: a head which discharges liquid to a medium; and a controller. The controller obtains print data for forming an image on the medium with a dot formed by making the liquid to land on the medium, the image including a code having information; selects, in the obtained print data, dot data corresponding to the dot forming the image as selected data, determines whether a first dot pattern including the selected dot data matches a predetermined delete pattern, and determines whether a second dot pattern including the selected dot data matches a predetermined exclusion pattern; performs a correction of the print data based on results of the determinations; and discharges the liquid from the head to the medium, based on the print data after the correction, to form the image on the medium.

A printing system and method print different colors onto a target object to form a machine-readable data representation having a symbol contrast of at least 40%. The printing system and method direct print heads to print the different colors by printing a base layer of a first color of the different colors on the target object and printing an upper layer of a different, second color of the different colors on top of the base layer of the first color, or by printing print the machine-readable data representation as an interdigitated data representation by printing the different colors onto the target object so that none of the different colors is printed on top of another color of the different colors.

A printing system and method print different colors onto a target object to form a machine-readable data representation having a symbol contrast of at least 40%. The printing system and method direct print heads to print the different colors by printing a base layer of a first color of the different colors on the target object and printing an upper layer of a different, second color of the different colors on top of the base layer of the first color, or by printing print the machine-readable data representation as an interdigitated data representation by printing the different colors onto the target object so that none of the different colors is printed on top of another color of the different colors.
