The controller allows an airflow flowing from the load side heat exchanger into a cabin through a first air outlet in the heating operation, and an airflow flowing from the cabin into the load side heat exchanger through the first air outlet is produced in the defrosting operation of the heat source side heat exchanger.

In order to optimize the failure safety of electrical and electronic components located in an engine compartment of a rail vehicle, which additionally comprises at least one driver's cab, the rail vehicle is operated with an air conditioning system, which is provided to generate overpressure in the engine compartment and to control the climate of the at least one driver's cab. The air conditioning system includes a first air guidance system to introduce fresh air into the at least one driver's cab and a second air guidance system to transmit at least one part of the fresh air introduced into the at least one driver's cab into the engine compartment.

The railcar includes: a duct wall forming an air flow passage which guides air in a car longitudinal direction; and a plurality of through holes lined up in the car longitudinal direction, the through holes being open at the duct wall as air outlet ports through which the air in the air flow passage is blown from the air flow passage toward a passenger room. A ratio of an opening area of one of the through holes to an area of one of a plurality of partial regions formed by dividing, in the car longitudinal direction, an inner surface of a lower wall portion such that in plan view, the regions contain the respective through holes falls within a range of 2.0% or more and 7.5% or less.
