SMART CAM FOR DIGITALIZATION OF A GATE MECHANISM
20200391776 · 2020-12-17 ·

A highway grade crossing gate mechanism having a smart cam system capable of measuring a parameter of the gate mechanism in real time is provided. The gate mechanism includes a DC motor, a cam system, and a controller. The DC motor is coupled to a main shaft for driving a gate arm between a vertical position and a vertical position. The cam system includes manually adjustable cams coupled to the main shaft that move contacts to open or close at some preset angular rotation in order to set operational features of a crossing gate. An internal sensing device is disposed internal to the cam system measuring a parameter of the gate mechanism in real time. A controller controls the motor and receives and stores the parameter. The parameter may be transmitted to an external network giving accurate feedback of the state of the gate mechanism in real time.

Method and system for sharing of information pertinent at a railway crossing

An information sharing system derives from a roadway vehicles management system position-related data of a roadway vehicle along a road and determines a roadway vehicle timing at or during which the roadway vehicle is estimated to arrive at or cross a railway crossing. The information sharing system further derives from a railway vehicles management system position-related data of a railway vehicle along the railway and determines a railway vehicle timing at or during which the railway vehicle is estimated to arrive at or have passed the railway crossing. The information sharing system determines, based on comparing a roadway vehicle time window to a railway vehicle time window, that the roadway vehicle time window and the railway vehicle time window at least partly overlap. The information sharing system provides information associated with the overlap to the roadway vehicle or the railway vehicle.

Method for Wirelessly Indicating Flaggers State and Safety on a Wireless Crossing
20200346674 · 2020-11-05 ·

A locomotive control method includes wirelessly communicating from at least one wireless transmitter positioned proximate a railroad crossing to a wireless locomotive receiver of a locomotive, either directly or indirectly via a wireless wayside transceiver, an indication if the railroad crossing is clear for passage of the locomotive through the railroad crossing, and receiving by the locomotive receiver the indication wirelessly communicated by the at least one portable transmitter. A locomotive controller or an operator of the locomotive can determine, based on the indication received by the locomotive receiver from the at least one portable transmitter, if it is safe for the locomotive to travel through the railroad crossing. The locomotive 4 can then be operated based on the determination.

Methods and apparatus to facilitate mitigation of vehicle trapping on railroad crossings

Method and apparatus are disclosed to facilitate mitigation of vehicle trapping on railroad crossings. An example vehicle comprises a global positioning system (GPS) receiver, sensors, a transceiver, a processor and a memory. The GPS receiver generates location information. The sensors generate vehicle information. The processor and memory are in communication with the sensors, the GPS receiver, and the transceiver. The processor is configured to: determine whether the vehicle is stranded on a railroad crossing using the location information and the vehicle information; if the vehicle is stranded, generate a help request; and transmit the help request to neighboring vehicles.

System to provide real-time railroad grade crossing information to support traffic management decision-making

A system that automatically communicates the event or potential event of a blocked railroad grade crossing to various users, including but not limited to emergency dispatchers and drivers, news media, traffic management systems, and the general public, specifically the location, time, and duration of the event or potential event. The system applies multiple technologies to detect the presence of activity on a rail line, transmits this detection data to a database, performs various analyses on the data, and communicates the status of grade crossings (blocked, potentially blocked, upcoming blockage, or clear) to assist various users with information to make more informed decisions.
