A method of retrofitting a wing of a fixed wing aircraft is disclosed including the steps of providing an existing aircraft wing with a main fixed wing portion, and the main fixed wing portion having a tip end and an existing movable flight control surface connected adjacent the tip end. The existing movable flight control surface is then removed from the main fixed wing portion, and a wing tip device and movable flight control surface are selected as a pair to replace the existing movable flight control surface, with the selected movable flight control surface having an aerodynamic surface of different shape to the shape of the flight control surface removed from the wing. The selected wing tip device and movable flight control surface are then fitted to the main fixed wing portion.

The trailing wing (7) is arranged to be vertically lower than the leading wing (5) in flight. The leading wing (5) and trailing wing (7) are blended together at their wingtips, forming a common wingtip (20), such that the underside surface (16) of the leading wing (5) forms a generally continuous and smoothly transitioning surface with the upper surface (22) of the trailing wing (7) so as to form a vortex guide surface (23) such that vortex air flow from the leading wing (5) is guided by the vortex guide surface (23) onto, or into the path of, the trailing wing (7).

Actuator assembly for moving an aircraft wing tip device

An actuator assembly for moving an aircraft wing tip device is disclosed. The wing tip device is rotatable about a hinge axis relative to a fixed wing of the aircraft. The hinge axis is orientated non-parallel to a line-of-flight direction of the aircraft. The actuator assembly includes a primary shaft having an axis of rotation orientated substantially parallel to the line-of-flight direction, a motor to cause rotation of the primary shaft, and a secondary shaft orientated substantially parallel to the hinge axis. The secondary shaft is couplable to the primary shaft and is arranged to rotate the wing tip device in response to the rotation of the primary shaft.

High-performance winglets are provided for attachment to an airplane wing. A split blended winglet includes a blended or upper winglet smoothly extending from the wing tip above a chord plane of the wing and a lower winglet including a ventral fin projecting below the chord plane from a lower surface of the upper winglet. The upper winglet includes a blade section that projects vertically along a reverse curve before transitioning to a linear upper blade portion. Upper and lower surfaces of the upper winglet are bound by leading and trailing edges that are swept toward an airstream direction, parallel with the chord plane, and curve toward the airstream direction before terminating at a point distal of the wing tip. Upper and lower surfaces of the lower winglet are bound by leading and trailing edges that curve toward the airstream direction and terminate at a point distal of the wing tip.

Wing for an aircraft

A wing for an aircraft includes, but is not limited to, a wing body having a wingtip, a leading-edge, and a trailing edge. The wingtip comprises an outboard-most portion of the wing body. The leading-edge is disposed along a forward portion of the wing body and is configured to cause a vortex to extend off the trailing edge at a location inboard of the wingtip when the aircraft is flown sub-sonically at a predetermined angle of attack. The trailing edge is disposed along an aft portion of the wing body and has an aft-most region disposed inboard of the wingtip at a position that corresponds with the location where the vortex extends off the trailing edge.
