Devices, systems and methods for natural feature tracking of surgical tools and other objects

Systems, methods and devices for use in tracking are described, using optical modalities to detect spatial attributes or natural features of objects, such as, tools and patient anatomy. Spatial attributes or natural features may be known or may be detected by the tracking system. The system, methods and devices can further be used to verify a calibration of a tool either by a computing unit or by a user. Further, the disclosure relates to detection of spatial attributes, including depth information, of the anatomy for purposes of registration or to create a 3D surface profile of the anatomy.

Method for monitoring object flow within a surgical space during a surgery

One variation of a method for tracking objects within a surgical space during a surgery includes: based on a first image depicting the surgical space at a first time, detecting a first object and a constellation of objects in the surgical space, estimating distances from each object—in the constellation of objects—to the first object, and calculating a contamination risk of the first object based on contamination scores and distances to the first object for each object in the constellation of objects; calculating a contamination score of the first object based on a combination of the contamination risks of the first object during the surgery; and, in response to the contamination score of the first object exceeding a threshold contamination score prior to contact between the first object and a patient, serving a prompt within the surgical space to address sterility of the first object.

An arthroscopic port introduction system includes an elongate hollow introducing needle and an elongate stylet sized and adapted to be disposed within the elongate hollow introducing needle together forming a single tissue-penetrating tip. The system also includes an elongate hollow enlarging shaft adapted to be disposed over the elongate hollow introducing needle. An operative tissue-penetrating length of the elongate hollow introducing needle is exposed beyond a distal end of the elongate hollow enlarging shaft. The elongate hollow introducing needle can be removed in a proximal direction from the elongate hollow enlarging shaft. An arthroscopic port sheath is disposed over the elongate hollow enlarging shaft and an operative tissue-penetrating length of the elongate hollow enlarging shaft is exposed beyond a distal end of the arthroscopic port sheath. The elongate hollow enlarging shaft can be removed in a proximal direction from the arthroscopic port sheath.

A sterile container for sterilizable medical goods includes a receiving space for the medical goods and a data acquisition unit for acquiring parameter data of influencing variables that act on the sterile container. The sterile container includes an NFC module with at least one sensor for acquiring sterility-relevant and/or sterilization-relevant data and a data logger for recording and storing data from the sensor at a recording interval. The sterile container can be monitored by a method that is automatic and sterile-container-specific.

GASTRIC SIZING SYSTEMS INCLUDING ILLUMINATING DEVICES AND METHODS OF BARIATRIC SURGERY USING THE SAME

Systems and methods for effecting bariatric procedures are disclosed. Each system includes an instrument, a control valve and, optionally, a suction controller. The instrument is in the form of an elongated, flexible sizing member having a distal end portion arranged for anchoring in the patient's stomach and for enabling fluids to be removed from the patient's stomach. The elongated flexible sizing member is configured to produce near infrared fluorescence to facilitate its location within the patient's stomach and to provide visual information about location of certain relevant internal anatomical features. Suction is applied to the patient's stomach by the distal end portion of the instrument to drain gastric fluids and to bring adjacent portions of the patient's stomach into engagement with the instrument to provide a visually perceptible delineation line along which a portion of the stomach may be resected, sealed and tested.
