Packaging machine with independently controllable movers

A packaging machine is provided for producing single and multiple compartment film wrapped pouches. Multiple linear motors allow aspects of the forming, filling, cutting and discharging to run at different speeds. The pouches are formed, filled and discharged from platens that are secured to movers that proceed through the packaging process by following magnetic fields created by independently controlled linear motors. Overall, cycle time is decreased as a result of speeding up parts of the process, including the platen return process, possible because there is no mechanical connection and not a single conveyor moving the platens while the other parts of the process may be simultaneously slowed down or even temporarily stopped. Changeover of platens, to accommodate different products, such as single compartment pouch to multiple compartment pouches, is also simplified because platens are simply connected to the movers and are thus easily removed and replaced.

The packaging machine may comprise a machine frame, at least one work station attached to the machine frame; a transport device that comprises a grouping unit for receiving packaging elements supplied by the feeding device to the packaging machine; and/or a transfer unit for transporting packaging elements received thereon to the work station. The grouping unit and the transfer unit can be brought together by way of a relative motion so that the packaging elements positioned on the grouping unit can be received by way of the transfer unit. The transfer unit may be capable of gripping the packaging elements. A method for producing a packaging as described above is also provided.

A packaging machine that includes a base film being conveyed in a clocked manner using a conveying device along a direction of transport to a forming station. The film is further conveyed to a loading path, onward to a sealing station and again onward to a cutting station. Packaging troughs are formed into the base film in the forming station by thermoforming. The packaging troughs are filled with products in the loading path. The filled packaging troughs are sealed by sealingly connecting a top film to the base film in the sealing station. The filled packaging troughs are cut out from the film composite in the cutting station. Centering holes are formed in the base film in a defined relative position to the packaging troughs, and the base film is aligned by engagement of at least one centering pin into the centering holes.
