Techniques for preparing multi-layer polymeric and mixed matrix membranes and a device for membrane distillation

Provided is a method of manufacturing a multilayer mixed matrix membrane which includes providing a support layer, casting a hydrophilic layer on a surface of the support layer, casting a hydrophobic layer on the hydrophilic layer, and allowing the layers to form a multilayer mixed matrix membrane. Also provided is a method of manufacturing a hollow fiber composite matrix membrane which includes providing a first solution having a hydrophilic polymer, providing a second solution having a hydrophobic polymer, and extruding the first and second solutions to form a multilayer hollow fiber composite matrix membrane. Additionally, a plate-and-frame membrane module for direct contact membrane distillation using a multilayer mixed matrix membrane is provided. The plate-and-frame membrane module includes a feed inlet capable of distributing process solution throughout the membrane module, a permeate inlet capable of distributing process solution throughout the membrane module, a tortuous promoter comprising multiple flow channels, a feed outlet, and a permeate outlet.

Mitigating leaks in membranes

Two-dimensional material based filters, their method of manufacture, and their use are disclosed. In one embodiment, a membrane may include an active layer including a plurality of defects and a deposited material associated with the plurality of defects may reduce flow therethrough. Additionally, a majority of the active layer may be free from the material. In another embodiment, a membrane may include a porous substrate and an atomic layer deposited material disposed on a surface of the porous substrate. The atomic layer deposited material may be less hydrophilic than the porous substrate and an atomically thin active layer may be disposed on the atomic layer deposited material.

Stackable screening plates (3) with radial screening apertures (10) are carried on a tubular shaft having an axial key. The plates have a choice of keyways (14, 15) allowing the plates to be stacked in alternate angular positions. Spring tongues (16) formed integrally with the plates provide uniform but adjustable mutual spacing.

A filtering mesh is disposed at a bottom side of the containment space. A first purifying opening is disposed at a top end of the main body. A second purifying opening is disposed at a lower sidewall position of the main body above the filtering mesh. A first cleaning opening and a second cleaning opening are disposed on the main body and respectively coupled to a first and second inner pipe. An outlet is disposed at a bottom of the main body. The stirring member has an upper cover corresponding to the first purifying opening of the main body. The upper cover further has a driving arm and a connecting rod, and the connecting rod has a plurality of stirring rods.

Perforated graphene deionization or desalination

A fluid deionizer includes at least one graphene sheet perforated with apertures dimensioned to allow a flow of fluid and to disallow at least one particular type of ion contained in the flow of fluid. A purge valve is placed in an open position so as to collect the at least one particular type of ion disallowed by the graphene sheet so as to clean off the at least one graphene sheet. Another embodiment provides a deionizer with graphene sheets in cylindrical form. A separation apparatus is also provided in a cross-flow arrangement where a pressurized source directs a medium along a path substantially parallel to at least one sheet of graphene from an inlet to an outlet. The medium flows through the plural perforated apertures while a remaining portion of the medium and the disallowed components in the medium flow out the outlet.
