Brine treatment scaling control system and method
A System for brine treatment scaling control in a water treatment system is described. In the system, a concentrated brine stream influent may be treated in an electrodialysis-reversal process to produce a concentrated brine stream effluent and a lower salinity diluent water, which may be potable water effluent. The concentrated brine stream effluent may be processed in a brine treatment scaling control system that may have a mixing vessel and a membrane filter with the mixing vessel seeded with calcium sulfate. A lowered salinity brine stream effluent may be produced for return to the electrodialysis-reversal process to allow operation at greater overall recovery and an elevated concentrated brine stream may be produced.
Electrochemical Ion Exchange Treatment of Fluids
A fluid treatment apparatus is constructed from at least one electrochemical cell including a bipolar ion exchange membrane and having a single output orifice to deliver treated fluid. The apparatus may employ a power supply transformer featuring a magnetic dispersion bridge to regulate the magnetic flux to secondary coils, thereby limiting the current delivered to the load and protecting the apparatus from over-current damage. The cell includes a membrane assembly which incorporates both the inner and outer electrodes to provide repeatable assembly and service, as well as reliable performance. The apparatus will provide continuous fluid treatment when designed with at least two stages, each stage including at least one cell, in which one stage is treating influent solution and another stage is regenerating. A method to operate these apparatus includes the steps of deionizing influent solution without interruption, halting deionization water flow and removing power from the deionization cells, flushing the liquid between membrane layers to the drain outlet, initiating regeneration power, and initiating regeneration flow.
Separation of Biomolecules and/or Demineralization of Solutions Containing Biomolecules and Ions by Electrochemical Ion Exchange
Methods and systems are provided for separation and/or purification of biomolecule(s) from a solution and for demineralization of a solution containing biomolecule(s) and ion(s). The methods and systems described herein include one or more ion exchange membrane(s), (e.g., ion exchange membrane(s) capable of water splitting), in an electrochemical cell, from which bound biomolecule(s) or ion(s) may be recovered from the membrane and separated from other components present in the solution by reversing the polarity of the electrodes. Using methods and systems described herein, biomolecules (e.g., whey proteins and lactose), and ions (e.g., milk salts), are able to be separated and recovered in their native forms with high biological value as premium food grade products. Methods and systems described herein offer a significant advantage over traditional processes used (e.g., in the food and beverage industry), for cost effective and chemical-free processing/extraction of valuable products from complex solutions such as whey.
APPARATUS FOR PURIFYING A LIQUID AND METHOD FOR OPERATING SAID APPARATUS
Apparatus for purifying a liquid, which comprises a container housing multiple closed cells, each delimited by an anionic membrane and by a cationic membrane, and multiple open cells, susceptible of being traversed by a liquid to be treated and each interposed between two adjacent closed cells. The apparatus also comprises two electrodes which are supplied with supply voltages with reversed polarities in order to push the ionized particles of the liquid into the closed cells during an operating phase, and in order to bring the ionized particles back into the open cells during a regeneration phase. The apparatus also comprises a polymer substance having functional groups with non-zero electric charge, which is contained inside the closed cells in order to create chemical bonds with the ionized particles of the liquid that enter therein.
Method for Fouling Reduction in Membrane Based Fluid-Flow Processes, and Device Capable of Performing Such Method
The invention relates to a method for fouling reduction and/or fouling removal and/or prevention of fouling in membrane based fluid-flow processes, such as ED, RED, EDR, CDI, fuel cells, filtration, flow batteries, and a device capable of performing such methods. The method comprises the steps of: providing a dynamic membrane stack with a number of membranes, the stack capable of changing the average inter-membrane distance between two adjacent membranes with the inter-membrane distance being the distance between the membrane surfaces of two adjacent membranes; performing the membrane based fluid-flow process in a first state with the stack having a first set of average inter-membrane distances; switching the membrane based fluid-flow process between the first state and a second state wherein the stack having a second set of average inter-membrane distances different from the first set; and performing the membrane based fluid-flow process in the second state, wherein, at least in an initiating phase, fouling is removed and/or reduced and/or prevented.
