SURFACE-INDEPENDENT, SURFACE-MODIFYING, MULTIFUNCTIONAL COATINGS AND APPLICATIONS THEREOF
The present invention provides a surface-independent surface-modifying multifunctional biocoating and methods of application thereof. The method comprises contacting at least a portion of a substrate with an alkaline solution comprising a surface-modifying agent (SMA) such as dopamine so as to modify the substrate surface to include at least one reactive moiety. In another version of the invention, a secondary reactive moiety is applied to the SMA-treated substrate to yield a surface-modified substrate having a specific functionality.
ARTICLES FOR MANIPULATING IMPINGING LIQUIDS AND METHODS OF MANUFACTURING SAME
This invention relates generally to an article that includes a non-wetting surface having a dynamic contact angle of at least about 90. The surface is patterned with macro-scale features configured to induce controlled asymmetry in a liquid film produced by impingement of a droplet onto the surface, thereby reducing time of contact between the droplet and the surface.
MONOLAYER DEPOSITION OF NANOPARTICLES
Methods of forming a monolayer of nanoparticles are described. The method may include forming an activated surface on a substrate. Methods may also include contacting the activated surface with a fluid including nanoparticles. Methods may further include forming a plurality of monolayers in the liquid on the activated surface. The plurality of nanoparticles may include a first monolayer of nanoparticles bonded to the activated surface. The plurality of nanoparticles may include a second monolayer of nanoparticles bonded to the first monolayer of nanoparticles. The bond strengths between a nanoparticle and the underlying substrate, between adjacent nanoparticles, and between nanoparticles of adjacent monolayers may be related by a specific relationship. The method may also include removing monolayers of the plurality of monolayers while retaining the first monolayer to form the substrate with the first monolayer. Systems for performing the methods and substrates resulting from the methods are also described.
Surface treatment solution composition containing trivalent chromium and inorganic compound, and method for manufacturing hot dip galvanized steel sheet surface-treated using same
Provided is a surface treatment solution composition comprising: 30 to 51 wt % of a trivalent chromium compound comprising chromium phosphate (A) and chromium nitrate (B) and having a content ratio of A/(A+B) that satisfies 0.3 to 0.6; 5 to 15 wt % of silane coupling agent; 0.2 to 3 wt % of vanadium-based anti-corrosive rust inhibitor; 3 to 12 wt % of colloidal silica; 0.5 to 5 wt % of polysiloxane copolymer; and 14 to 61.3 wt % of water, a hot dip galvanized steel sheet surface-treated using same, and a manufacturing method thereof. The hot dip galvanized steel sheet treated with the surface treatment solution composition containing trivalent chromium has an excellent corrosion resistance, blackening resistance, pipe-forming oil reactivity, and alkali resistance.
Reactive superhydrophobic surfaces, patterned superhydrophobic surfaces, methods for producing the same and use of the patterned superhydrophobic surfaces
The present invention generally relates to methods for modifying and/or producing superhydrophobic surfaces. In particular, the present invention relates to reactive superhydrophobic surfaces which can be modified so as to produce superhydrophobic surfaces having patterns of different chemical functionalities or physical properties such as superhydrophilic-superhydrophobic micropatterns, and uses of these patterned superhydrophobic surfaces as self-cleaning coatings, anti-fouling coatings, or slippery coatings, or for chemical, biological and diagnostic applications, as well as methods for producing the same.
FUNCTIONAL COATINGS ENHANCING CONDENSER PERFORMANCE
Coatings for enhancing performance of materials surfaces, methods of producing the coating and coated substrates, and coated condensers are disclosed herein. More particularly, exemplary embodiments provide chemical coating materials useful for coating condenser components.
CORROSION RESISTANT OPTICAL DEVICE
A corrosion-resistant optical device is disclosed. The device includes a substrate, a silver layer upon the substrate, and an insulating layer that provides abrasion resistance. The device is immersed in a thiol-rich solution. The thiols form a corrosion-inhibiting monolayer upon any exposed silver surface. This increases the environmental resistance of the optical device, keeping water from interacting with the silver layer.
Self-assembly patterning of organic molecules on a surface
The embodiments disclosed herein include all-electron control over a chemical attachment and the subsequent self-assembly of an organic molecule into a well-ordered three-dimensional monolayer on a metal surface. The ordering or assembly of the organic molecule may be through electron excitation. Hot-electron and hot-hole excitation enables tethering of the organic molecule to a metal substrate, such as an alkyne group to a gold surface. All-electron reactions may allow a direct control over the size and shape of the self-assembly, defect structures and the reverse process of molecular disassembly from single molecular level to mesoscopic scale.
PROCESSING OF SUPERHYDROPHOBIC, INFRARED TRANSMISSIVE, ANTI-REFLECTIVE NANOSTRUCTURED SURFACES
Methods for producing nanostructured, hydrophobic, superhydrophobic, or hydrophilic, transmissive, anti-reflective surfaces are described. The method for providing a hydrophilic surface includes steps of providing a substrate that is transmissive at at least one wavelength in the infrared to ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum and comprises at least one surface including nanostructures of a size smaller than the at least one wavelength; and functionalizing the at least one surface with hydroxyl groups thereon. A hydrophobic or superhydrophobic surface can be provided by contacting the at least one surface with a hydrophobic fluoropolymer for a time sufficient to apply at least a monolayer of fluorine-containing material to the at least one surface. These methods provide devices having excellent transmittance and anti-reflectance properties and which are resistant to seawater.
Transparent Durable Superhydrophobic Ceramic Coating
A superhydrophobic ceramic coating that is transparent and durable includes a dispersion of a multiplicity of silica nanoparticles stacked to form a topography that is rough that is infused with and conformally coated with a sol-gel glass matrix that has a fluoroalkyl silane or an alkyl silane monolayer on the surface of the coating. The silica nanoparticles do not scatter light to a large extent as they are sufficiently small and free of aggregation. The sol-gel glass is formed from a trialkoxysilane precursor and applied to the stacked silica nanoparticles to retain the rough topography of the deposited nanoparticles.
