FIBRE-REINFORCED METAL COMPONENT FOR AN AIRCRAFT OR SPACECRAFT AND PRODUCTION METHODS FOR FIBRE-REINFORCED METAL COMPONENTS

Production methods for producing a fibre-reinforced metal component having a metal matrix which is penetrated by a plurality of reinforcing fibres are provided. One method includes depositing in layers reinforcing fibres in fibre layers, depositing in layers and liquefying a metal modelling material in matrix material layers, and consolidating in layers the metal modelling material in adjacently deposited matrix material layers to form the metal matrix of the fibre-reinforced metal component. Here, the metal component is formed integrally from alternately deposited matrix material layers and fibre layers. An alternative method includes introducing an open three-dimensional fibrewoven fabric consisting of reinforcing fibres into a casting mould, pouring a liquid metal modelling material into the casting mould and consolidating the metal modelling material to form the metal matrix of the fibre-reinforced metal component. Here, the metal component is formed integrally from the consolidated metal modelling material and the reinforcing fibres.

Process Control of Electron Beam Wire Additive Manufacturing

A method of controlling operation of an electron beam gun and wire feeder during deposition of pools of molten matter onto a substrate to form beads upon solidification of the molten matter. The method includes providing a substrate and a wire source. A molten pool of liquid phase metal is formed on the substrate by melting the wire utilizing an electron beam generated by an electron beam gun. The liquid metal solidifies into a solid phase. A controller utilizes data from a sensor to adjust a process perimeter based, at least in part, on data generated by the sensor.

Method of forming an inflated aerofoil

A method and apparatus for forming an object by additive layer manufacturing. The method comprises: a) applying, by a heat source (4), heat to a portion of a surface of a workpiece (1) sufficient to melt said portion; b) adding material to the melted portion and moving the heat source (4) relative to the workpiece (1) whereby progressively to form a layer of material (10) on the workpiece (1); c) cooling the formed layer (10) to bring at least part of the layer (10) to a state of crystallisation, there producing a modified workpiece; d) peening, using a plurality of independently controllable impact treatment devices (7), the modified work-piece so as to plastically deform the cooled at least part of the layer (10); and repeating steps a) to d) as required whereby to form the object.

METHOD FOR MACHINING A SURFACE OF A METAL COMPONENT, AND METAL COMPONENT

A method for machining a surface of a metal component, in particular a connecting rod or a cam for a motor vehicle, including the following steps: providing a metal component which has a surface to be machined; premachining the surface to be machined; structuring the premachined surface by means of a laser beam in such a way that elevations but no depressions are formed as laser structures on the premachined surface with respect to the level thereof.

Two-Stage Corrosion Barrier Between Two Work Pieces
20170283623 · 2017-10-05 ·

A method and assembly for preventing corrosion between two work pieces. At least a portion of a neck portion of a second end portion of an end piece is disposed within a hollow portion in a first end portion of a drive shaft tube. The inner surface of the first end portion of the drive shaft tube is magnetic pulse welded to a first tapered portion of the neck portion of the end piece. A coating and a sacrificial material is applied over an interface between an end surface of said first end portion of said drive shaft and said end piece defining a gap. The coating and sacrificial material is then leveled and a shrink-wrap material is disposed radially outboard from the gap. Finally, heat is applied to the shrink-wrap material sealing said gap.

REACTIVE DEPOSITION SYSTEMS AND ASSOCIATED METHODS

Techniques for reactive deposition are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method includes providing laser energy into a deposition environment, the laser energy having a focal point and introducing a first precursor material and a second precursor material into the deposition environment at or near the focal point of the provided laser energy, thereby causing the first and second precursor materials to melt and react to form a composite material different than both the first and second precursor materials. The method also includes allowing the formed composite to solidify by moving the focal point of the provided laser energy away from the melted first and second precursor materials.

Method of riveting

A method of inserting a rivet into a workpiece comprises moving the rivet and workpiece relative to one another, along a longitudinal axis of the rivet, so as to drive the rivet into the workpiece. The rivet is rotated about its longitudinal axis, relative to the workpiece, for at least part of the time during which it is in contact with the workpiece. The speed of said rotation, or the speed of movement along the longitudinal axis of the rivet, is altered at least once before driving of the rivet into the workpiece is complete. One axial end of the rivet has a tip for piercing the workpiece, and the rivet has a substantially cylindrical shank extending longitudinally from the tip. The shank has one or more surface irregularities.
