Dynamic regulation of contact pressures in a blade sharpening system is provided. An example multiphase grinding wheel has a grinding face with one or more abrasive concentric rings for sharpening the cutting blade of the log saw machine, and one or more padded concentric rings consisting of fiber padding. Sharpening with the multiphase grinding wheel improves cut quality, increases blade life, removes glues and varnishes from the cutting blade, reduces blade deformation, and hones the edge of the cutting blade. A pneumatic tensioning system uses air bladders to apply dynamic cushioning and processor-controlled contact pressure between the grinding wheels and the cutting blade during sharpening. The fiber-padded grinding wheels and the air bladder tensioner provide improved sharpness of the cutting blade and longer life for the mechanical components.

The cutting machine includes a shape storage section, a shape measurement unit, a determination section, and an end face correction device. The shape storage section stores a cross-sectional shape of a support surface, which a mount of a cutting unit has, in an axial direction of a spindle. The shape measurement unit contactlessly measures the cross-sectional shape of the support surface in the axial direction of the spindle. Through a comparison between the cross-sectional shape stored in the shape storage section and the cross-sectional shape measured by the shape measurement unit, the determination section determines whether or not the support surface needs a correction. The end face correction device corrects a shape of the support surface.

The cutting portion has a cross section of minimum width, a cross section of maximum width and at least one cutting profile that extends obliquely between the cross section of minimum width and the cross section of maximum width, so that the cutting profile forms an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis. The cutting profile has a cutting height in a direction orthogonal to the longitudinal axis equal to at least the difference between the cross sections of maximum width and of minimum width. The connection portion has width less than or equal to the minimum width.

The positioning device is equipped with automatic elements for detecting the wear of the abrasive side of the grinding wheels.
