High performance environmentally friendly sealant composition for tire repair

An environmentally friendly puncture sealing composition is provided which includes natural rubber latex, suitably high filtered natural rubber latex having a controlled particle size, and an aqueous antifreeze agent that includes water, glycerin and propylene glycol. The aqueous antifreeze agent has a viscosity profile similar to common ethylene glycol-based antifreeze agents, but is free of ethylene glycol. The puncture sealing composition avoids the environmental hazards of ethylene glycol, and is effective at temperatures of 30 C. and lower.

The present invention is directed to a plug for sealing a puncture in a tyre, whereby the plug comprises a head portion and a tail portion, the head portion comprising: a porous material that comprises open pores and capable of absorbing >0.02 grams of water per gram of porous material; and an accelerant selected from the group consisting of a salt, a polar solvent, an acid, and any combinations thereof, wherein the accelerant is retained in the pores of the porous material and is configured to react on contact with a curable sealant selected from the group consisting of anionic stabilized sealants, steric stabilized sealants and anionic colloidal dispersions thereby reducing curing time of the sealant, and wherein the porous material does not comprise the sealant.

A method for making a compartmentalized sealant strip and barrier assembly 10 has the steps of co-extruding a barrier strip 9 of non-sealant elastomeric material with a plurality of projecting linear extending walls 9c and a sealant strip 11 wherein the sealant strip 11 is formed on one side of the barrier strip 9 filling the space between the plurality of projecting walls 9c to form a plurality of linearly extending rows of sealant 11 across the transverse width of the co-extrusion to form the compartmentalized sealant strip and barrier assembly 10. The step of co-extruding may further include the step of: forming the projecting walls 9c on an inclined angle relative to a plane perpendicular to the width of the assembly 10. The step of co-extruding further has the step of forming the barrier strip 9 with lateral edges 9a and 9c that extend beyond the lateral outermost sealant strips 11 on each side of the assembly 10, the lateral edges 9a, 9b being bonding surfaces to seal the sealant strip and barrier assembly 10 into an uncured rubber layer when assembled into an unvulcanized tire 2.

The present invention provides: a cationic natural rubber latex comprising cationic natural rubber microparticles in which the surfaces of natural rubber microparticles are coated by a cationic polymer, a weight average molecular weight of the cationic polymer being from 3000 to 150000, a concentration of the cationic natural rubber being from 30 to 70% by mass, a viscosity at 20 C. being 500 mPa.Math.s or less, and surface potential of the cationic natural rubber microparticles being 3 mV or less; and a tire puncture sealant comprising the cationic natural rubber latex and an acidic resin emulsion, a mass ratio of a solid content of the cationic natural rubber latex to a solid content of the acidic resin emulsion being from 90:10 to 10:90. Such tire puncture sealant has superior puncture-sealing ability, storage stability, and workability.
