The invention concerns a method to manufacture a mold (10) for forming contact lenses (100) using the technique of molding with molds of monomeric and/or polymeric material; such molds (10) comprise a male element (11) and a female element (12), which cooperate to define a cavity suitable to accommodate monomeric and/or polymeric material in the liquid state intended to form the lens (100), wherein the method provides to obtain, by means of laser processing, a plurality of grooves (23) in the male element (11) intended to form functional elements in relief (101) of the lenses (100). The invention also concerns a mold (10) for contact lenses (100) made of monomeric and/or polymeric material that can be obtained with the method as above.

METHOD FOR PRODUCING WETTABLE SILICONE HYDROGEL CONTACT LENSES

The invention provides a method for producing coated silicone hydrogel contact lenses in a cost-effective manner. The method comprises treating the molding surfaces of polypropylene lens molds (or other hydrophobic plastic molds) with a vacuum UV or a corona plasma to increase the surface energies of the molding surfaces of the lens molds, cast-molding a silicone hydrogel lens formulation containing a relatively small amount of at least one carboxyl-containing vinylic monomer in the treated lens molds, and heating resultant cast-molded silicone hydrogel contact lenses in an aqueous coating solution comprising a water-soluble and thermally crosslinkable polymeric material to form a coated silicone hydrogel contact lens comprising a bulk silicone hydrogel material and a hydrogel layer covalently attached onto the bulk silicone hydrogel material.

Ophthalmic device molds made from at least one water-soluble vinyl alcohol copolymer, ophthalmic devices such as ocular inserts and contact lenses and including silicone hydrogel devices formed using these molds, packaged ophthalmic devices present in a solution comprising the at least one water-soluble vinyl alcohol copolymer, and related methods are described. The methods of manufacturing ophthalmic devices can use wet demolding processes, or wet delensing processes or both wet demolding and wet delensing processes involving dissolving the molds in water or an aqueous solution.
