METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PULMONARY INTERVENTIONS
Apparatus and methods for deactivating bronchial nerves extending along the secondary bronchial branches of a mammalian subject to treat asthma and related conditions. An ultrasonic transducer (11) is inserted into the bronchus as, for example, by advancing the distal end of a catheter (10) bearing the transducer into the secondary bronchial section to be treated. The ultrasonic transducer emits circumferential ultrasound so as to heat tissues throughout circular impact volume (13) as, for example, at least about 1 cm.sup.3 encompassing the bronchus to a temperature sufficient to inactivate nerve conduction but insufficient to cause rapid ablation or necrosis of the tissues. The treatment can be performed without locating or focusing on individual bronchial nerves. The apparatus and methods utilized for lung tumor ablation.
Noninvasive methods and systems of determining the extent of tissue capture from cardiac pacing
Methods and systems of evaluating cardiac pacing in candidate patients for cardiac resynchronization therapy and cardiac resynchronization therapy patients are disclosed. The methods and systems disclosed allow treatments to be personalized to patients by measuring the extent of tissue capture from cardiac pacing under various therapy parameter conditions. Systems and methods of optimizing right ventricle only cardiac pacing are also disclosed.
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR TREATING KIDNEYS
The present invention relates to means and methods for modifying renal function in a subject, comprising selecting a patient requiring an increment in renal function; emitting a quantity of ultrasound radiation, enough to provide an increment in renal function, to at least one part of a kidney for a period of time from about 1 hours to about 30 days.
METHODS FOR TREATING URINARY STRESS INCONTINENCE
Methods for treating urinary stress incontinence by non-invasively delivering energy to one or more submucosal regions of vaginal tissue to induce remodeling within the vaginal tissue are provided. In some embodiments, the energy delivery results in heating of the target tissue to a temperature that ranges from about 38° C. to about 46° C. In some embodiments, the subject methods involve cooling a mucosal epithelial layer over the vaginal tissue. In some embodiments, a reverse thermal gradient is produced as the mucosal epithelium is cooled while energy is delivered to the underlying vaginal tissue.
Adaptive, closed-loop ultrasound therapy
Various approaches to focusing an ultrasound transducer includes causing the ultrasound transducer to transmit ultrasound waves to the target region; causing the detection system to indirectly measure the focusing properties; and based at least in part on the indirectly measured focusing properties, adjusting a parameter value associated with at least one of the transducer elements so as to achieve a target treatment power at the target region.
Sonodynamic therapy using sonodynamically activated coordination complexes of transition metals as sensitizing agents
A method for destroying cells and/or microorganisms in an organism includes the following steps: (a) administering to the organism a composition including a sonosensitizing compound containing at least one transition metal with three bidentate ligands; and (b) exposing the sonosensitizing compound in the organism to ultrasound, wherein the ultrasound is effective to activate the sonosensitizing compound to destroy at least one of the cells and the microorganisms in the organism. The ultrasound is preferably used in conjunction with electromagnetic therapies comprising photodynamic therapy, low-level laser therapy, and radiation therapy. The ultrasound is preferably administered at a duty cycle in the range from 5% to 95% at a power density of 10 W/cm.sup.2 and a frequency in the range from 10 Hz to 10 MHz.
Therapy apparatus for treating tissue by the emission of remote crossed focused ultrasound waves
A therapy apparatus for treating tissue by emission of focused ultrasound waves, including: a creation surface of a pressure field of focused ultrasound waves divided into at least N sectors having segments of asymmetrical concave curve with centres of curvature; centres of curvature asymmetrical to the extent where the centres of curvature are situated at different distances from the plane of symmetry or from at least one of the axis of symmetry and at different depths taken according to the axis of symmetry; the individual axes intersecting between the focal zones and the creation surface or beyond the focal zones such that the beams originating from the sectors intersect to create a focal coverage zone which is off-axis relative to the plane of symmetry or to the axis of symmetry; the sectors of this creation surface creating energy deposit zones with profiles corresponding to the focal coverage zones.
ULTRASOUND DEVICE FOR VULVOVAGINAL REJUVENATION
A handheld ultrasound device and corresponding methods used for rejuvenating the vulvovaginal area of the user. In general, the handheld ultrasound devices include a device body coupled to an acoustic coupler and a handle. The device body further includes internal components including an ultrasound transducer, an energy delivery element, and circuitry for controlling the ultrasound output. The methods of using the handheld ultrasound device include engaging the tissue in and around the vulvovaginal area with the energy delivery element, applying ultrasound energy to the vulvovaginal tissue from the energy delivery element and through the acoustic coupler, and affecting a measurable parameter associated with vulvovaginal rejuvenation.
Non-Cavitational Mechanical Pulsed Ultrasound Therapy
Short ultrasound pulses or bursts, delivered at intermediate intensity to the target tissue transmits acoustic radiation forces into the targeted tissue without generating acoustic cavitation and without cellular fractionization. Thus, the present invention exploits the mechanical effects of high-intensity pressure fields only, without cavitation, by optimizing the interaction between acoustic pulses and radiation forces to apply mechanical forces to tissue to generate a broad spectrum of desired and varied bioeffects.
