Extracts of microalgae and their application

Suggested are new extracts of microalgae selected from the group consisting of (i) Monodus sp. (ii) Thalassiosira sp. (iii) Chaetoceros sp. and/or (iv) Chlorococcum sp.
obtainable by treating said microalgae with a solvent selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1-C.sub.4 aliphatic alcohols, ethyl acetate, water or their mixtures, removing the dissolved extracts from the residues and recovering the pure extracts from the solvent. The extracts show excellent properties particularly in modulating the metabolism of human skin and hair follicles.

The invention describes a combination of at least one aromatase inhibitor selected from the group of chemical-synthetic aromatase inhibitors and aromatase inhibition exhibiting extracts of soya beans and rapeseed, respectively, and at least one plant extract that contains one or more active ingredient substance(s) extracted from the plant, which is(are) selected from the group of 5α reductase type I and/or type II inhibitors and androgen receptor blockers, said combination being contained for example in a composition and having special properties for influencing hair growth. Uses of this combination are also described.

Topical formulations of 5-α-reductase inhibitors and uses thereof

Disclosed herein are topical compositions of 5-α reductase inhibitors, such as dutasteride or finasteride, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, ester, or derivative thereof and the use of the compositions for the treatment of hair loss secondary to endocrine therapy in patients with breast cancer (Endocrine Therapy-Induced Alopecia or ETIA), androgenetic alopecia (AGA), alopecia areata, and hirsutism. The topical composition is advantageous over the existing oral compositions of 5-α reductase inhibitors because the topical composition is safer and more effective. The topical formulation may allow for a slow release of the active ingredient dutasteride, better penetration at the therapeutically effective amount of dutasteride with an improved safety profile because it does not need to travel through the bloodstream to be efficacious, thereby minimizing the risk of systemic side effects.

COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR TREATING HAIR FOLLICLE-LINKED CONDITIONS

Disclosed are compositions comprising one or more enzymes capable of catalysing the hydrolysis of keratinocyte effector molecules such as protein keratins that support the function and integrity of the human skin and its appendages such as the hair follicle that are supported by keratinocytes to maintain the biological barrier, function and struture. The compositions are useful in treating follicular dermatoses and hair follicle-linked conditions, such as Hirsutism and Hidradenitis suppurativa. The compositions may also be used to loosen hair from the skin and thereby be used for removing undesired hair from the human body.

Compositions and methods are disclosed herein for inducing (up-regulating) the expression of sulfotransferases in the hair follicles, e.g., the scalp. Increasing sulfotransferase is beneficial for metabolizing pro-drugs that require sulfonation to be activated, e.g., minoxidil sulfate is the active metabolite of minoxidil. A method for combining the compositions described herein with topical minoxidil to enhance minoxidil treatment for androgenetic alopecia is described. Additional methods and compositions include the use of retinoid X receptor agonists, retinoic acid receptor agonists, and nuclear receptor agonists in an RXR−NR heterodimer. Additional methods and compositions include the use of a topical solution containing an alkalinizing agent or an alkalinizing agent used with a penetration enhancer for up-regulating the sulfonating capacity of hair bearing skin, hair follicles, and/or keratinocyte cells. In addition, compositions and methods for increasing or decreasing the growth rate of hair follicles is disclosed by altering the intracellular pH.
