PLY FOR A TIRE

A tire includes a pair of axially spaced apart annular bead cores, a carcass ply extending around both bead cores, a tread for engaging a contact surface and being disposed radially outward of the carcass ply, and a belt structure disposed radially between the carcass ply and the tread. The carcass ply includes a plurality of cords embedded in a polymer matrix. The carcass ply has a first radially upper surface and a second radially lower surface disposed opposite the first surface. The first surface defines first portions and second portions interspaced between each first portion. Each first portion has a thickness greater than each second portion thereby forming throated portions between each cord of the plurality of cords.

The invention relates to a rubberized reinforcing ply (1) for articles consisting of an elastomeric material, preferably for vehicle tires, wherein the reinforcing ply (1) has a multiplicity of textile strengthening members (2) which are arranged parallel to and spaced apart from one another, wherein each textile strengthening member (2) is composed of at least one twisted multifilament yarn, and wherein the textile strengthening member (2) is not composed of the material rayon. The reinforcing ply (1) satisfies the following condition: (D.sup.2/E.sub.0) in mm corresponds to a value in a range from 0.22 mm to 0.38 mm, and the reinforcing ply (1) has a strength of >10 kN/dm, where D is the diameter of the textile strengthening member (2) in mm and lies in a range from 0.38 mm to 0.52 mm, and where E.sub.0=100/epdm.

Light weight heat-sealed tire

A tire having reduced mass and low rolling resistance and a method of manufacture thereof achieves reduced weight by using thin layers of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU's) to heat seal the carcass, breaker, and tread layers of the tire to each other, rather than embedding the layers in conventional, relatively thicker and heavier layers of sulfur cured vulcanized carbon filled elastomers. Creep and spring-back of the thermoplastic polyurethanes during cure is avoided by maintaining the adhered layers under pressure until the assembly cools below its glass transition temperature. In embodiments, the heat sealing can be performed on the forming drum, and in some embodiments cool rollers are applied to the heat-sealed carcass so as to accelerate the cooling to below the glass transition temperature.
