A retaining device for an exterior add-on part of a motor vehicle comprises a base part for exterior mounting on the motor vehicle, on which a connecting element is mounted with a first pivoting device, via which the connecting element can be pivoted relative to the base part about a first pivot axis between a working position and at least one protection position. A first spring device, via which the connecting element can be returned from the at least one protection position into the working position. A retaining element mounted on the connecting element, by a second pivoting device having a second spring device, to be pivotable about a second pivot axis between the working position and the protection position, wherein the retaining element can be returned to the working position by the second spring device.

A display system includes an image capture device, a display device, and at least one of a first illuminance sensor and a second illuminance sensor. The image capture device captures an image rearward of the vehicle. The display device is coupled to the image capture device, and receives at least a portion of the rearward image captured by the image capture device. Provision of a sense of distance by motion parallax is easily realized. A display image is obtained by superimposing an image showing a vehicle on a captured image obtained by capturing an image on a rear side from the vehicle. For example, the image showing the vehicle is a computer graphics image. For example, a change is made in a superimposed positional relationship between the captured image and the image showing the vehicle in accordance with motion of a viewpoint of a driver. Since the display image is not only made from the captured image obtained by capturing an image on a rear side from the vehicle, but the display image is obtained by superimposing the image showing the vehicle on the captured image, it is possible to easily provide a sense of distance by motion parallax.
