The concave mirror and the optical element are each provided separately from the display element. The optical element (i) transmits reflected light resulting from the light emitted through the display surface of the display element being reflected by the concave mirror, and (ii) reflects light from outside off a surface of the optical element, the surface facing the concave mirror, the light from the outside entering the optical element from a side through which the reflected light exits, and being reflected by the concave mirror.

An electronic mirror device includes a display, a controller that controls the display, a switching portion, and a preliminary starter. The display includes a main case having an opening, a video display portion, and a semi-transparent mirror. The video display portion includes a display screen and displays camera images captured by a camera. The semi-transparent mirror is provided between the display screen of the video display portion and the opening of the main case and displays a mirror reflection. The switching portion causes the display to switch between displaying the camera images and the mirror reflection. A vehicle occupant viewing system and a corresponding method for displaying a vehicle occupant on an image display unit. The system may comprise one or more vehicle interior cameras for obtaining occupant images of one or more occupants in rear seats of the vehicle. The system may include two vehicle interior cameras, one in a forward facing orientation and another in a rear facing orientation, which can capture occupant images of occupants in forward facing positions and occupants in rear facing positions such as infants in car seats.
