The controller is configured to establish desired values of operating parameters of the machine, the parameters including a wrap pattern, weight of the film, a number of revolutions, a percent of stretch of the film, and a tension of film, during operation of the machine, monitor actual values of the operating parameters using data from the sensors, and in response to a difference between the desired values and the actual values being greater than a threshold, issue a command to adjust operation of the machine such that the difference is less than the threshold.

In one form, the system includes an order of merchandise items to be assembled in containers, and a predetermined set of containers defining different sizes and including at least two different types of containers. The system also includes a control circuit configured to: receive notification of the order, select a first type of container, determine a first subset of the plurality of merchandise items to be received in the selected type of container, select a size of the selected type of container to receive the first subset of merchandise items, and instruct the disposition of the first subset of merchandise items within the selected type and size of container.

3-D PRINTED PACKAGING

Items may be packaged for shipping or storage using additive manufacturing techniques, also known as three dimensional (3-D) printing. Packages made by such processes may be referred to as 3-D printed packages and may include packing material printed at least partially around the item(s) and/or an outer cover printed about at least a portion of an exterior of the packing material and/or the item(s). A packaging system may include a 3-D printer and a computing device communicatively coupled to the 3-D printer. The computing device may obtain a packaging model describing a package for one or more items. A print module of the computing device may include instructions to print the package at least partially about the item(s) according to the packaging model.

Based at least in part on an input to a packaging decision system, the computer system generates a package decision indicating a package type associated with the packaging of the item. The input is based at least in part on the item data. The packaging decision system is trained based at least in part on packaging data associated with historical item orders. The computer system sends the package decision to the workstation.

Vision-enhanced photocell system for package sorting

A system and method for enhanced monitoring and sorting of delivery items, such as packages, which are moved and sorted via a delivery service conveyor device. Conventional systems may employ photocells, which detect interrupted light beams, to identify packages or delivery items along a conveyor path. The present system and method enhances photocell function by adding image detection and analysis to the mail path; and further by modifying the photocell signals to the sorter/conveyor control. The present sensing system is located in the same area on the transport as the photocell, and uses a camera to capture an image of the mail path in the photocell area. The system and method then analyzes a package image to formulate a more accurate item detection signal, based on photocell data and image data, for input to the sorter/conveyor control system.
