Photoactivated Selective Release (PHASR) of Droplets from Microwell Arrays
Provided is photoactivated selective release (or PHASR) of droplets from a microwell array enabled by a photoresponsive polymer layer integrated into the microfluidic device. This photoresponsive layer is placed in between a microwell array that traps a large number of droplets and a monolithic flow chamber that can be used for recovery. By using focused light, the photoresponsive layer can either be punctured or induced to create local heating to selectively release droplets. The type of photoacoustic dye and the physical properties of the photoresponsive layer can be engineered to induce either puncture of the membrane or pushing of droplets out of the microwells with low thermal impact on the droplets. This approach has broad application in the field of soft lithography-based microfluidic devices for various applications including photoresponsive valves as well as high throughput single cell sequencing.

Method of providing a plurality of through-holes in a layer of structural material
A method of providing a MEMS device including a through-hole in a layer of structural material using a multitude of MEMS method steps. A versatile method to create a through-hole, in particular a multitude thereof, involves a step of exposing a polymeric layer of positive photoresist in a direction from the outer surface of the positive photoresist to light resulting in an exposed layer of positive photoresist including relatively strongly depolymerized positive photoresist in the top section of a recess while leaving relatively less strongly depolymerized positive photoresist in the bottom section of the recess.
ELECTRICAL COMPONENT
The present invention relates to an electrical component for a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) device, in particular, but not limited to, an electromechanical actuator. In one aspect, the present invention provides an insulated electrical component for a microelectromechanical systems device comprising: i) a substrate layer comprising first and second sides spaced apart in a thickness direction; ii) one or more electrical elements arranged over the first side of the substrate layer, wherein each of the one or more electrical elements comprises: a) a ceramic member; and b) first and second electrodes disposed adjacent the ceramic member such that a potential difference may be established between the first and second electrodes and through the ceramic member during operation; iii) a continuous insulating layer, or laminate of insulating layers, arranged to overlie each of the one or more electrical elements arranged on the first side of the substrate layer; and iv) a passivation layer, or laminate of multiple passivation layers, disposed adjacent to, and at least partially overlying, each of the one or more electrical elements so as to provide electrical passivation between the first and second electrodes of each of the one or more electrical elements; wherein: a) the passivation layer, or at least an innermost layer of the laminate of multiple passivation layers which is disposed adjacent each of the one or more underlying electrical elements, is discontinuous; and/or b) the laminate of multiple passivation layers is recessed at a side which faces away from each of the underlying electrical elements, wherein a recess is provided in a region overlying each of the one or more electrical elements, such that the laminate of passivation layers is thinner in a thickness direction across the recess compared to other non-recessed regions of the laminate of passivation layers.
ANTI-CLOGGING AND ANTI-ADHESIVE MICRO-CAPILLARY NEEDLE WITH ENHANCED TIP VISIBILITY
An object of the present invention is to provide an anti-adhesive/anti-clogging and/or color marked/tinted micro-capillary tube (microtube), microneedle, or micropipette. Typically, the color/tint will be selected such that the tip of the microneedle or micropipette is in contrast (e.g., visually) to the biological material. The tint/color may be selected to contrast the stained biological material. In some aspects, the color mark comprises nanoparticles that are modified by adding a non-adhesive coating/material that minimizes protein adhesion/adsorption. The microtubes and/or micropipettes may be treated with an anti-clogging reagent and an anti-adhesive reagent to prevent or reduce clogging and adhesion of the micropipette or microneedle to biological materials. The microtubes and/or micropipettes may be formed using additive printing processes and additive manufacturing techniques or from micropipette and microneedle pullers.
