An object of the present invention is to provide a water purification filter comprising activated carbon as a filtration material and a biodegradable polymer as a binder component, which water purification filter has a filtration flow rate sufficient for practical use as a pot-type water purifier while maintaining a certain free residual chlorine filtration capacity, and has a certain degree of hardness and excellent handleability. Provided is a water purification filter obtained by winding a nonwoven sheet containing fibrous activated carbon and a heat fusible core-sheath composite fiber and then heat fusing the sheet, wherein the heat fusible core-sheath composite fiber includes a sheath portion containing a biodegradable polyester resin having a melting point of 80 to 140° C. and a core portion containing a synthetic resin having a melting point at least 20° C. higher than the melting point of the biodegradable polyester resin, and wherein the water purification filter has a density of 0.12 to 0.30 g/cm.sup.3 and a specific surface area of 500 to 1800 m.sup.2/g.

Provided herein are compositions and methods comprising a fragrance and from about 0.5 weight % to about 5.0 weight % of a granular malodor adsorbent which can be used to eliminate malodor in animal waste. The granular malodor absorbent can be granular molecular sieves or granulated activated carbon and has a pore size from about 0.4 nm to about 2.0 nm and a total surface area from about 100 m.sup.2/g to about 1500 m.sup.2/g.

Activated Carbon and Method of Fabrication Thereof

The present invention relates, in general terms, to methods of forming activated carbon. The method of forming activated carbon comprises mixing carbon black with an activation catalyst and heating the carbon black in order to form the activated carbon. The present invention also relates to applications of activated carbon as disclosed herein. In a preferred embodiment, the activation catalyst is selected from ammonium persulfate, sodium persulfate, potassium persulfate or a combination thereof.

A method of fabrication of a porous polymer aerogel amine material includes preparing a solution comprising at least a solvent, amine monomers having protecting groups, one or more crosslinkers, and one or more radical initiators, heating the solution to promote polymerization and to produce a polymerized material, performing solvent exchange with the polymerized material, causing a deprotection reaction in the polymerized material to remove the protecting groups to produce a deprotected material, soaking and rinsing the deprotected material to remove excess reagents and any byproducts of the deprotection reaction, and drying the deprotecting material to produce the amine sorbent. A system to separate CO.sub.2 from other gases has a polymer porous aerogel sorbent having greater than 5 wt % of amine containing vinyl monomers integrated into a polymer backbone, and the amine containing vinyl monomers may have a molecular weight of less than 100 g/mol.

The hydrocarbon adsorbent includes an alkali metal and a zeolite having a ring structure that includes at least 10 members is used. In the hydrocarbon adsorbent, a content of the alkali metal is 1 to 40 mass % based on a total mass of the hydrocarbon adsorbent, a content of the zeolite having a ring structure that includes at least 10 members is 99 to 60 mass % based on the total mass of the hydrocarbon adsorbent, and at least a portion of the alkali metal is in a state of being ion-exchangeable.

The present invention provides novel chromatographic materials, e.g., for chromatographic separations, processes for their preparation and separations devices containing the chromatographic materials. The preparation of the inorganic/organic hybrid materials of the invention wherein a surrounding material is condensed on a superficially porous hybrid core material will allow for families of different hybrid packing materials to be prepared from a single core hybrid material. Differences in hydrophobicity, ion-exchange capacity, chemical stability, surface charge or silanol activity of the surrounding material may be used for unique chromatographic separations of small molecules, carbohydrates, antibodies, whole proteins, peptides, and/or DNA.
