A device for cleaning an optical communication device includes a hollow outer stem, an inner stem core, a locking handle, a flexible base, at least one ring seal, and a flexible cover. The inner stem core, fits within a length of the hollow outer stem and is slidable along the length of the hollow outer stem. The locking handle is coupled to a top end of the inner stem core, and is movable between a released position and a locked position, where moving the locking handle to the locked position from the released position slides the inner stem core within the hollow outer stem. The flexible base is coupled to a bottom end of the hollow outer stem, and is transformable between a contracted position when the locking handle is in the released position and an expanded position when the locking handle is in the locked position. The at least one ring seal is coupled to the flexible base. The flexible cover is wrapped around the flexible base and the at least one ring seal.

Applicant has disclosed a handheld tool and related method for cleaning and lubricating: the entire star chamber in a firearm (e.g., AR-15 and M-14 rifles), including the top lands, bottom lands, and canted faces of the locking lugs forming a star inlet to the chamber in a rifle; and the remaining headspace of the firearm. One tool embodiment comprises: a paddle grip; a midsection shank; and a generally T-shaped foam swab affixed over an end portion of the shank, wherein the swab has two wings and a stem. The wings are designed to fit, simultaneously or contemporaneously, between and against opposing faces of different pairs of successive locking lugs and against bottom lands of those different pairs. Afterwards, the swab can be pushed through the star inlet to clean the chamber portion behind the inlet, including the backside of the inlet.

In some variations, this invention provides an electro-mechanical device for automated cleaning validation of a selected surface. The device moves a wetted swab over a cleaned surface to recover any remaining soil left over from the cleaning process. The device accepts a standard sampling swab that has been wetted with the required liquid solution. The device maintains constant swab pressure to ensure maximum recovery of soil or contaminants. The device includes an electronic controller for adjusting the movement of parts to effectively validate cleaning of the selected surface. The surface to be validated may be a substantially flat surface, or rounded. The surface may be contained within a vessel, reactor, a pipe, tank, or other equipment. The device may be disposed on an extension arm to allow the device to be positioned appropriately, without the need for a person to be close to the device for validation.
