In various embodiments, the mandrel includes a frangible portion that is removed from the propellant grain after the propellant grain has cured around the mandrel. A second portion of the mandrel may be left behind in the propellant grain. The mandrel may include a support structured disposed in the through hole of the mandrel. The support structure may include a plurality of longitudinal channels for directed exhaust gasses through the mandrel upon ignition of the propellant grain.

An apparatus and a method for manufacturing a reactor capable of both absorbing a dimensional variation of a core and preventing deformation due to a resin pressure during molding are provided. An apparatus for manufacturing a reactor is provided with a core. The apparatus includes a mold including a cavity for housing the core. The mold includes a plurality of pins protruding into the cavity. When the core is disposed in the cavity, at least one of the plurality of pins is not fixed, and each of the pins functions as a positioning pin. When a molded article is molded, the pin is fixed, and each pin functions as a core support pin for supporting the core against a resin pressure during molding.

A method of making a rub strip includes resin transfer molding an arcuate composite structure. The resin transfer molding step includes inserting a honeycomb core into a mold cavity having an arcuate base so that the honeycomb core assumes an arcuate shape. The resin transfer molding step further includes directing liquid resin into the mold cavity to form the composite structure comprising the liquid resin and the honeycomb core, and curing the liquid resin for a sufficient period of time. The resin transfer molding step further includes removing the composite structure from the mold. The method further includes repeating the resin transfer molding step until a sufficient number of arcuate composite structures are produced. The method further includes coupling a plurality of the arcuate composite structures together to form the rub strip.
