Multi-Segment Mandrel for Processing a Composite Part and Method for Fabricating a Composite Part
An example mandrel for processing a part is described including a plurality of elastomeric components aligned end to end and spaced apart linearly to form a segmented mandrel body, and compressible interconnections positioned within spacing between adjacent elastomeric components and abutting the adjacent elastomeric components. The compressible interconnections allow the plurality of elastomeric components to expand axially due to thermal expansion resulting in a distribution of pressure. An example method for fabricating a composite part is also described including placing a base composite layer into a cavity of a tooling surface, inserting a mandrel into the cavity of the tooling surface such that the base composite layer is between the mandrel and the tooling surface, applying a skin to the mandrel and the base composite layer forming a package, enclosing the package in a vacuum bag and curing, and removing the mandrel from the cavity of the tooling surface.
FLEXIBLE THERMOPLASTIC COMPOSITE COUPLING AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE
A process for forming a flexible composite driveshaft includes providing a mandrel having a rigid region and a compressible region, applying fiber tape to the mandrel using automated fiber placement with in-situ laser curing in the rigid region and without in-situ laser curing the compressible region, and compressing the fiber tape and compressible material in the compressible region to form diaphragms that extend radially outward to a diameter that is at least twice the size of a diameter of the composite driveshaft in the rigid region.
METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR FORMING COMPOSITE STRINGER ASSEMBLIES
Described herein are methods and systems for forming composite stringer assemblies or, more specifically, for shaping composite charges while forming these stringer assemblies. A system comprises a bladder, having a bladder core, and a bladder skin. The bladder core is formed from foam. The bladder skin is formed from an elastic material and encloses the bladder core. When a composite stringer assembly is formed, the bladder is positioned over a charge base. The charge base later becomes a stringer base, such as a fuselage section or a wing skin. A charge hat is then positioned over the bladder and is conformed to the bladder. A combination of the bladder skin and the bladder core provides support during this forming operation and later while the stringer assembly is cured. In some examples, the bladder core is collapsible for the removal of the bladder from the cavity of the stringer assembly.
COLLAPSIBLE SPAR MANDREL
According to an aspect, a method of assembling a mandrel includes assembling a plurality of members via interlocking features arranged at opposing edges of each member of the plurality of members to form a compartment, the assembled members having a collective outer surface that conforms to an inner surface of the spar. A support member is inserted into the compartment formed radially inward from the assembled members, the support member making contact with a portion of each member of the plurality of members.
Flexible tube structure and method of fabrication
A tubular container and container forming device and method according to the present invention provides a dispensing tubular container having a dispensing end, a sealed end, and a region along the length of the tubular container having surface variations (e.g. outward extending teeth) formed along the length of the tubular container as part of the tubular container over which a movable compression device may move, engage and be longitudinally retained as it is advanced toward the dispensing end. The teeth may have a radial and lateral wall thicknesses similar or equal to the tubular container wall thickness, to thicknesses greater than the tubular container wall thickness, and further include varying radial thickness or profile along an exterior dimension (e.g. length) of the tubular container. Also included are structures and processes to provide an injection molded polyethylene or polypropylene tubular container having longitudinal formations of desired wall thicknesses or profile.
INJECTION TOOLING FOR BARREL-SHAPED ROTATING PART
A tooling for injecting a polymer resin into a fibrous preform for the manufacture of a revolution part in composite material including a barrel shape with an inside diameter of smaller diameter delimiting the revolution part into an upstream portion and a downstream portion of the inside diameter, the upstream portion including a back-draft intermediate portion, injection tooling wherein, to allow a demolding of the barrel-shaped part once the injection and the polymerization of the polymer resin are carried out, the injection tooling includes on the one hand a frustoconical drum comprising a first drum portion in direct contact with an inner surface of the portion of the revolution part downstream of the inside diameter and a second drum portion and on the other hand a segmented insert whose outer surface matches an inner surface of the portion of the revolution part upstream of the inside diameter.
Permanent tooling for composite coil spring compression molding
Tooling for use in forming a variable taper component is provided. The tooling includes an inner mandrel and an outer mandrel disposed around the inner mandrel. The inner mandrel includes a master insert defining opposed tapered edge faces, an external surface having a variable taper and a plurality of recesses configured to receive at least a portion of the variable taper component, and a tapered internal surface. The inner mandrel also includes a plurality of interlocking pieces arranged concentrically around the master insert, and a tapered inner sleeve disposed against the tapered internal surfaces of the plurality of interlocking pieces and the master insert. The outer mandrel defines a corresponding plurality of recesses configured to receive at least a portion of the variable taper component, wherein a maximum width of the interlocking pieces and the master insert is smaller than a minimum width of ends of the variable taper component.
METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING A HOLLOW COMPOSITE STRUCTURE, PARTICULARLY A SPAR BEAM FOR A WIND TURBINE ROTOR BLADE, AND AN ASSOCIATED MANDREL
A method for producing a hollow composite structure, such as a spar beam for use in a wind turbine blade, includes placing fiber reinforcement material around a mandrel within a mold, and curing the fiber reinforcement material. The mandrel is formed from a compressible material having a rigid neutral state with a rigidity to maintain a defined shape of the mandrel during lay up and curing of the fiber reinforcement material. Subsequent to curing, a vacuum is drawn on the mandrel to compress the compressible material so that the compressed mandrel can be drawn out through an opening in the composite structure, the opening having a size such that the mandrel could not be withdrawn through the opening in the rigid neutral state of the mandrel.
Bladder mandrel package
A bladder mandrel package, used to manufacture a composite structure, includes a mandrel and a wrap ply, surrounding the mandrel to form a wrapped mandrel. The bladder mandrel package also includes a first radius filler, coupled to the wrap ply at a first radius of the wrapped mandrel, and a second radius filler coupled to the wrap ply at a second radius of the wrapped mandrel. The mandrel, the wrap ply, the first radius filler, and the second radius filler are consolidated to from the bladder mandrel package.
