A method eliminates voids in the bond line and manipulates a thickness of the bond line. This method includes: applying an adhesive at a center of an area of a structure; placing a doubler on the adhesive over the area of the structure, wherein the doubler has a peripheral edge; and maintaining a negative pressure at the peripheral edge of the doubler while simultaneously maintaining a positive pressure at the doubler to purge entrapped gases and control a thickness of the bond line at the peripheral edge of the doubler.

INSTALLATION TOOL AND ASSOCIATED METHOD FOR APPLYING A PATCH TO A SURFACE

An installation tool and method are provided to apply a patch to a structure while controlling the porosity in the bond line. An installation tool is provided that includes a frame defining an internal cavity. The installation tool also includes a flexible membrane that divides the internal cavity into a first chamber proximate the surface and a second chamber separated from the surface by the first chamber and the flexible membrane. The flexible membrane is releasably attached to the patch such that the patch faces the surface. The frame includes first and second vacuum ports into the first and second chambers, respectively, such that pressure therewithin is separately controllable. The pressure within the first and second chambers is controlled such that the adhesive is degassed while the patch remains spaced from the surface and the flexible membrane is thereafter caused to be stretched to urge the patch toward the surface.

METHOD FOR FILLING SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS IN AN AIRCRAFT WING
20190118497 · 2019-04-25 ·

A filling method for filling surface imperfections on a surface of a wing comprising a scanning step in which a control unit controls a movement of a scanner past the surface of the wing to scan the surface and transmit the collected data to the control unit, a computation step in which the control unit computes a digitized surface from the data, a determination step in which the control unit determines each surface imperfection by comparing the reference surface and the digitized surface, a generation step in which the control unit generates a digital model of the patch intended to fill the surface imperfection, and a printing step in which the control unit controls the movement of a 3D printer past each surface imperfection and commands the activation of the 3D printer in order to make it print the patch.
