A method for manufacturing a prosthetic component include injection molding a prosthetic component with a polymeric material. The prosthetic component includes a final surface positioned on one side and multiple coring features positioned on an opposite side. The coring features may include multiple ribs and slots. The method further includes machining the prosthetic component to remove the coring features and form a final surface on the opposite side. The prosthetic component may be a femoral component for a prosthetic knee joint.
Methods for controlling polymer chain scission
Methods for extrusion of polyolefins (110) that utilize melt temperature to control molecular weight and also reduce gels. Disclosed herein is an example method for controlling polymer chain scission in an extrusion system (100), comprising: melting a polyolefin resin (110) in extruder (102) at a first melt temperature to form a first melt (112); passing the first melt (112) through a screen pack (106); forming the first melt 112) into a first polyolefin product (116, 118); melting additional polyolefin resin (110) of the same grade in the extruder (102) at a second melt temperature to form a second melt (112), wherein the second melt temperature differs from the first melt temperature by 5 C. or more to control chain scission in the extruder (102); passing the second melt (112) through the screen pack (106); and forming the second melt (112) into a second polyolefin product (116, 118).
SYSTEMS FOR MANUFACTURING BULKED CONTINUOUS FILAMENT FROM RECYCLED PET
A system for manufacturing bulked continuous carpet filament that is adapted for providing a polymer melt and dividing the polymer melt into a plurality of streams (e.g., at least six or eight streams) to increase a surface area of the polymer melt. The plurality of streams is then exposed to a pressure that is below approximately 5 millibars. The streams are then recombined into a single polymer stream and formed into bulked continuous carpet filament. In various embodiments, an extruder, such as a multi-screw extruder, is used to divide the polymer melt into the plurality of streams.
COATED BI-DIRECTIONALLY ORIENTED MULTILAYER FILM
A multilayer film includes an inner layer system having a first surface and a second surface; a first layer bound to the inner layer system at the first surface of the inner layer system; and a second layer comprising a first surface and a second surface, wherein the second layer is with its first surface bound to the inner layer system at the second surface of the inner layer system; a coating layer bound to the second layer at the second surface of the second layer; wherein the inner layer system consists of a polymer formulation (A) comprising: ?10.0 and ?90.0 wt % of a first ethylene-based polymer being LLDPE-A; and ?10.0 and ?90.0 wt % of HDPE having a density of ?940 and ?970 kg/m.sup.3; the first layer contains a polymer formulation (B) including LLDPE-A, the second layer contains a polymer formulation (C) including a modified polyethylene; and the coating layer includes a polyurethane; wherein the multilayer film is a bi-directionally oriented film, and the orientation in both directions is introduced in the solid state. Such multilayer film exhibits reduced oxygen transmission rates and/or water vapour transmission rates.
Method of three-dimensional printing
A sustainable material suitable for three-dimensional printing is disclosed. The sustainable material comprises a resin derived from a bio-based diacid monomer and a bio-based glycol monomer. The resulting sustainable material provides a much more robust 3-D printing material with different properties than conventional materials.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR MANUFACTURING BULKED CONTINUOUS FILAMENT FROM COLORED RECYCLED PET
A method of manufacturing bulked continuous carpet filament that includes providing a polymer melt and separating the polymer melt from the extruder into at least eight streams. The multiple streams are exposed to a chamber pressure within a chamber that is below approximately 5 millibars. The streams are recombined into a single polymer stream and formed into bulked continuous carpet filament.
Controlling moisture in and plasticization of bioresorbable polymer for melt processing
Methods and systems for controlling the moisture content of biodegradable and bioresorbable polymer resin during extrusion above a lower limit that allows for plasticization of the polymer resin melt and below an upper limit to reduce or prevent molecular weight loss are disclosed. Methods are further disclosed involving plasticization of a polymer resin for feeding into an extruder with carbon dioxide and freon.
Method For Producing Films Based On Plasticized Polyvinyl Acetal Having A Predefined Viscosity
Plasiticized polyvinylacetal films with grater film-to-film uniformity are produced by a process of extruding a melt stream containing a polyvinyl acetal and a plasticizer at 150-250 C., the film having a predefined melt viscosity at 60-170 C., by providing a first melt stream of at least a first plasticizer and a first polyvinyl acetal resin and measuring its melt viscosity at 60-170 C. online; and adjusting the 60-170 C. melt viscosity by adding a second plasticizer and/or a second polyvinyl acetal resin to the first melt stream in an amount to provide a second melt stream with a melt viscosity at 60-170 C. having a difference of at most 20% to the predefined melt viscosity at 60-170 C.

Systems and Approaches for Manufacturing Parts
Systems and approaches for controlling a molding machine having a mold forming a mold cavity and being controlled according to a mold cycle include injecting a molten polymer into the mold cavity. A first and a second sensor are used to obtain first measurements of respective first and second variables during the injection cycle. The second sensor is positioned downstream from the first sensor. The first and second sensors are used to obtain second measurements of the respective first and second variables during the injection cycle. A first difference value is determined between the first measurements of the first and second variables. A second difference value is determined between the second measurements of the first and second variables. The first and second difference values are compared, and at least one control parameter is adjusted based on a difference between the first and the second difference values.
