A visual deceleration indication apparatus signals to pedestrians and other vehicles that a vehicle is slowing down or coming to a stop. Illuminating devices, such as LEDs, contained in a license plate frame located in the front of the car, are activated when the vehicle decelerates. An accelerometer or other sensory device is used to detect deceleration and sends a signal to illuminate the LEDs, thereby letting others know that the vehicle is slowing down. The license plate frame may be connected directly to a rear brake light component without the use of accelerometers or other sensors. When the brake is applied, the LEDs in the license plate frame are illuminated. The LEDs may be contained in other forms and located in different positions on the front or side of the car.

Active lighting control for communicating a state of an autonomous vehicle to entities in a surrounding environment

Systems, apparatus and methods implemented in algorithms, software, firmware, logic, or circuitry may be configured to process data and sensory input to determine whether an object external to an autonomous vehicle (e.g., another vehicle, a pedestrian, a bicyclist, etc.) may be a potential collision threat to the autonomous vehicle. The autonomous vehicle may include a light emitter positioned external to a surface of the autonomous vehicle and being configured to implement a visual alert by emitting light from the light emitter. Data representing a light pattern may be received by the light emitter and the light emitted by the display may be indicative of the light pattern. The light pattern may be selected to gain the attention of the object (e.g., a pedestrian, a driver of a car, a bicyclists, etc.) in order to avoid the potential collision or to alert the object to the presence of the autonomous vehicle.

The light emitting device (2) is disposed on an undersurface of a front of an automobile body (1), and emits diffused light in a fixed range of the front of the automobile body by receiving an input of the brake actuating signal so that the diffused light forms an optical projection image (Pi) on a road within a range of a shadow of the automobile body (1) as a caution arousing sign. Apedestrian looks at the opticalprojection image (Pi) displayed in the shadow (1a) of the automobile body (1), and ascertains that a brake operation is being performed, thus enabling the pedestrian to cross a pedestrian crossing at ease.
