Mandrel

A mandrel suitable for supporting and unwinding a convolutely wound web material is disclosed. The mandrel has a mandrel shaft with a longitudinal axis, a plurality of mandrel arms extending from the mandrel shaft, and at least one expansion element disposed upon one of the mandrel arms. The mandrel shaft is capable of rotating about the longitudinal axis. Each of the mandrel arms is disposed and rotatable about the longitudinal axis. The at least one expansion element is expandable radially away from the mandrel arm relative to the longitudinal axis. The convolutely wound web material is disposable about each of the mandrel arms. Further, the at least one expansion element is expandable into contacting and releasable engagement with the convolutely wound web material. The convolutely wound web material is fixably and releasably disposed about each of the mandrel arms.

The roll changing apparatus includes an unwinding assembly including a first unwinding mechanism and a second unwinding mechanism; and a roll changing assembly including a first adsorption mechanism, a second adsorption mechanism, and a cutting mechanism. The cutting mechanism is used to cut off a first material strip between the second adsorption mechanism and a first adsorption area or a second material strip between the second adsorption mechanism and a second adsorption area.

With the method removable carrier units (8a, 8b) with new supply rolls (9) are fed in a series one after the other to a work area (AB) of a handling device (5), the work area (AB) of which extends into at least one position of the operating position of the removable carrier unit (8a, 8b) arranged in the packaging machine (3), which is equipped with a supply roll (9), so that it replaces removable carrier units (8a, 8b) located in the packaging machine (3) and used up supply rolls (9) with new removable carrier units (8a, 8b) with in each case a new supply roll (9). Here respective removable carrier units (8a, 8b) are inserted alternately in at least two different installation positions of the packaging machine (3) and its flat packaging material (10) is connected with the packaging material still located in the packaging machine (3).

A method for unwinding includes loading a first reel of web material into a first unwind position where the web is unwound. A splicing unit is then moved in the machine direction toward the first unwind position until there is sufficient space to allow a further reel to be loaded into a second unwind position where the web from the second reel is unwound once loaded. Then, the web from the first reel is spliced to the second reel, and the web of the first reel is thereafter cut. The process continues in the opposite direction after removing the first reel from the first unwind position. The web of the second reel is unwound in the second position, the splicing unit is moved toward the second unwind position until there is sufficient space to allow a further reel to be loaded into the first unwind position.
