Plants can be genetically engineered or selected using a suitable gene marker to have enhanced ureide accumulation. The present invention further provides methods of protecting plants, or extending the shelf life of fresh plant produce by application of exogenous ureides.

The present application discloses an anti-microbial coating containing an alkyl urea polyalkylene imine polymer and an anionic polymer. The alkyl urea polyalkylene imine polymer is a polyalkylene imine polymer having at least one alkyl group attached to the polyalkylene imine polymer backbone by way of at least one urea linkage that includes a nitrogen heteroatom on the polyalkylene imine polymer backbone. The anti-microbial coating does not contain heparin or a polymer comprising heparin.
