The present invention relates to a cutting insert. The cutting insert, according to one embodiment of the present invention, comprises: a top surface; a bottom surface; side surfaces which connect the top surface and the bottom surface to each other; a hole which penetrates the top surface and the bottom surface; and cutting edges which are defined by the top surface and the side surfaces, wherein a main cutting edge side surface among the side surfaces is provided with a first relief surface, a transition surface extending from the first relief surface, and a second relief surface extending from the transition surface, the first relief surface is formed such that the relief angle or the relief surface width varies along the cutting edge, and the transition surface is provided with a plurality of ridges in order to reinforce the rigidity of the cutting edge.

A cutting tool has an indexable cutting insert removably secured to a holding portion of an insert holder. The cutting insert has opposing first and second end surfaces with an insert peripheral surface and a central axis extending therebetween, at least two cutting portions, and at least one mounting cut-out. Each cutting portion has a cutting edge formed by the intersection of rake and relief surfaces formed on the insert peripheral surface, one rake surface facing in a first rotary direction about the central axis and one rake surface facing in an opposite second rotary direction. Each mounting cut-out extends between the first and second end surfaces and has spaced apart first and second flank surfaces disposed on a cut-out peripheral surface which is separate and spaced apart from the insert peripheral surface. The first and second flank surfaces face in the first and second rotary directions, respectively.

MODULAR ROTARY CUTTING TOOLS

Rotary cutting tools are disclosed comprising shanks and replaceable cutting inserts are provided. A head of the cutting insert includes insert centering surfaces that contact the pocket centering walls of the shank, and insert drive surfaces that contact the torque transmitting pocket drive walls of the shank. The configurations and sizes of the shank and cutting insert features are controlled to provide improved torque transmission, rigidity and stability during operation of the rotary cutting tools.

A cutting tool having a cutting insert releasably retained in insert pocket by a fastening member. The insert pocket has first and second side surfaces. The insert pocket has a base surface which includes at least one male or female type pocket engagement member which includes at least one sloping pocket wedge abutment surface. The insert has first and second side abutment surfaces. The cutting insert has an insert lower surface which includes at least one male or female type insert engagement member which includes at least one sloping insert wedge abutment surface. By virtue of the sloping orientation of the at least one pocket wedge abutment surface and the at least one insert wedge abutment surface, a clamping force applied by the fastening member urges said surfaces to slide over each other so that the cutting insert sits firmly in the insert pocket.

A ridgeline between the second surface and the outer peripheral side surface forms a second ridgeline. The first ridgeline includes a first straight portion, a first wiper edge, a first corner cutting edge, and a second straight portion. The second ridgeline includes a third straight portion, a second wiper edge, a second corner cutting edge, and a fourth straight portion. The outer peripheral side surface includes a first wiper flank surface, a first corner flank surface, a second wiper flank surface, a second corner flank surface, a first plane, and a second plane. The first plane is contiguous to each of the first corner flank surface and the second wiper flank surface.

A cutting tool is rotatable about a central axis and has a front end in an axial direction along the central axis. The cutting tool includes a body, a blade, a first attachment screw, an adjustment piece, and a second attachment screw. The body has an outer peripheral surface. A pocket is formed in the outer peripheral surface at an end portion on the front end side. The blade is attached to the body by screwing the first attachment screw into the body in the pocket. The blade has a blade side surface facing inward in a radial direction that is orthogonal to the axial direction and that passes through the central axis. An inner wall surface of the pocket has a contact surface facing the blade side surface with a space being interposed between the blade side surface and the contact surface in the radial direction.

Tool system

A tool system includes a machine-proximal shank configured to be introduced into a driven tool receptacle and containing a device for transferring a rotating movement to be picked up from the driven tool receptacle. A tool-proximal shank is configured as a tool holder or to have a tool holder releasably connected thereto. A gear mechanism disposed between the machine-proximal shank and the tool-proximal shank is configured to transfer a rotating movement transmitted by the device in a reduced manner to the tool-proximal shank. At least one insert seat configured on the tool holder for receiving an interchangeable cutting insert is provided on an end face of the tool holder extending transversely to a longitudinal axis of the tool holder. A method for machining a workpiece is also provided.
