STEERING WHEEL WITH FIXED CENTER
Embodiments are disclosed of an apparatus including a housing. A column gear is positioned within the housing and adapted to be coupled to a steering column, and the column gear has a first diameter, rotates about a first axis, and has teeth along its perimeter. A steering wheel gear is positioned within the housing and spaced apart from the column gear and adapted to be coupled to a steering wheel; the steering wheel gear has a second diameter, rotates about a stationary hub having a second axis, and has teeth along its perimeter. A transfer gear is positioned within the housing. The transfer gear rotates about a third axis, has teeth along its perimeter, and is positioned so that the teeth of the transfer gear engage the teeth of the column gear and the teeth of the steering wheel gear.
Retractable steering column assembly and method
A selectively autonomous steering column assembly includes a steering column shaft. Also included is a steering input device coupled to the steering column shaft. Further included is a column adjustment assembly configured to translate the steering column shaft between a retracted position and a driving position. Yet further included is at least one signal indicating when the steering column shaft is in the driving position. When steering column shaft is in the retracted position, directional control is automated, and when the steering column shaft is returned to the driving position as indicated by the at least one signal, direction control via the steering input device is enabled.
ASYMMETRIC AIRBAG ASSEMBLY FOR STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
An airbag module assembly for mounting to a steering wheel assembly has an airbag, a housing and a visual display unit. The housing has a chamber for stowing the airbag. The housing has an attachment for rigidly fixing to a steering wheel and a forward-facing opening of the chamber for receiving the airbag. The cover encloses the housing and stowed airbag. The housing is fixed to the steering wheel offset and positioned removed from a center region of the steering wheel spaced from a rim of the steering wheel. The airbag module is configured upon deployment to have the inflated airbag project outward over the rim toward an occupant.
Visual Display Unit For A Steering Wheel Assembly
A visual display unit configured to mount on a steering wheel assembly has a screen display, preferably a touch screen display. The screen display is mounted over an airbag module of the steering wheel assembly. A hinged structure holds the screen display to the steering wheel assembly. The hinged structure is configured to be pivotally attached to a center portion of the steering wheel assembly and non-obstructively movable upon deployment of an airbag. The visual display unit can be a computer or video monitor for occupant viewing while traveling in an autonomous vehicle. The visual display unit includes driver alerts activated by the autonomous vehicle. The visual display unit preferably includes vehicle instrumentation gauges, satellite navigation system, speed, temperature and other data displays.
Steering Handle
A steering handle for inputting a driver's steering command into a steer-by-wire vehicle steering mechanism comprises a rotatably mounted main part for actuation by the driver. A transmission is arranged in a receptacle on the main part, an input member of the transmission can be coupled to an electric motor, and an output member of the transmission is coupled to the main part.
Apparatus for varying the direction of travel of a vehicle, in particular a water-borne vehicle
Disclosed is an apparatus for varying the direction of travel of a vehicle, including a rotatable unit operable by the vehicle driver, in particular by gripping, to vary the vehicle's direction of travel, and a support, or hub for rotatably supporting the rotatable unit, having a respective longitudinal axis and connected fixedly to the vehicle. The support for rotatably supporting the rotatable unit has a unit for transferring movement of the rotatable unit to a corresponding unit for controlling the vehicle's direction of travel, such the rudder of the water-borne vehicle, through a corresponding transmission. The transfer unit transfers movement of the rotatable unit, or steering wheel to the unit for controlling the vehicle's direction of travel, in particular through the transmission to the self-same controlling unit, preferably through the rotary transmission shaft, with a transmission ratio of 1:1.

A steering device for a vehicle having a steering wheel, a steering wheel hub or steering wheel spokes which are connected in a rotationally fixed manner to the steering wheel for transmission of a steering motion, a central part which is disposed in a stationary position with respect to the steering wheel in a central region defined by the steering wheel and which has a visible surface area in the central region formed predominantly by a screen display and wherein the screen display is an input/output device and is configured for control of at least one functionality of the vehicle.

Systems and devices for implementing airbags within vehicles are described herein with the airbags being designed to utilize a reduced interior surface area of a vehicle. In one embodiment, an airbag device for a vehicle, comprises an airbag capable of being deployed upon detection of a collision condition for the vehicle and a container to contain the airbag prior to deployment. In one example, the container has a depth that exceeds a diameter of the container.
