LASER WELDING SYSTEM AND METHOD USING COOLING MASK TO CONTROL THE WIDTH OF THE WELD
A laser welding method and system for joining portions of first and second workpieces of thermoplastic material that is partially permeable to a laser beam but absorbs radiation from the laser beam. The first and second workpieces, which are made of material that absorbs radiation from a laser beam, are clamped together. A mask is placed on a first surface of the first workpiece, the first surface being opposite the surface engaging the second workpiece. The mask is impermeable to a laser beam and forms a slot for passing a laser beam to the portion of the first surface of the upper workpiece exposed by the slot, so that heating and melting of the material of the workpieces is limited to the width of the slot. A laser beam is directed onto the slot and moved in a manner to illuminate the slot to melt and join the workpieces.

For a given laser wavelength the travel distance of the laser beam through the component A measures at most 10 mm, and given a white pigmentation of the component A in wt.-%, the product of the travel distance of the laser 10 beam through the component A in mm and white pigmentation in wt.-% is less than 1.25, and the travel distance of the laser beam through the component A measures at most 1 mm.

A method for producing a partly transparent body with a color gradient, include: providing a transparent first casing having a first joint surface on a protrusion and including an encased object; providing a second casing which is not completely transparent and which has a second joint surface in a recess. The shape of the protrusion and the shape of the recess correspond to each other; and combining the first casing and the second casing by inserting the protrusion into the recess and melting the first joint surface of the first casing with the second joint surface of the second casing. A pressure force and a temperature are applied to the first joint surface and the second joint surface such that the first joint surface of the first casing transitions into the second joint surface of the second casing in a visually seamless manner, followed by a removal of material.

In particular, during the preparation of the laminate, a high frequency welding machine is used for bonding thermoplastic layers. The present invention uses a high frequency welding machine for the instant welding of the thermoplastic layers. Good bonding strength exists between different layers. Further, the patterns of the core layer are intact, and have high-definition images. The patterns are located in the core layer, not affected by external environmental factors, and not easily abraded. Further, multiple surfaces of the part for an eyewear have patterns, increasing the beautiful appearance of the part for an eyewear, and meeting the requirements of customers to the largest extent.

A molded article for laser welding is disclosed which has excellent visible light transmittance and laser transmittance and in which variation in laser transmittance is suppressed, and an agent for suppressing variation in laser transmittance of a molded article for laser welding. The molded article for laser welding includes a polybutylene terephthalate resin composition containing 100 parts by mass of (A) a polybutylene terephthalate resin, (B) a polycarbonate resin in which the melt viscosity at 300 C. and a shear rate of 1000 sec.sup.1 is 0.20 kPa.Math.s or greater, and 1 part by mass or greater and 10 parts by mass or less of (C) an epoxy-based compound, the molded article having a thickness at a welded part of 1.3 mm or greater, and an agent for suppressing variation in laser transmittance of a molded article for laser welding, the agent containing an epoxy-based compound.
