A liquid discharge head includes: a channel member having a nozzle surface and a back surface disposed separately from the nozzle surface, the channel member formed having nozzles arranged in the nozzle surface, individual channels connected to the nozzles, first and second common channels connected to the individual channels, a first opening that is opened in the back surface and communicates with an end of the first common channel, and a second opening that is opened in the back surface and communicates with an end of the second common channel, and a filter member disposed on the back surface and having a filter that covers the first opening. The second opening is not covered with the filter, and an area of the first opening is larger than an area of the second opening.

While the pump is driven in a non-communication state between the upstream filter chamber and the liquid storage portion, the non-communication state is switched to a communication state therebetween through the return path using the discharge valve.

A liquid ejecting apparatus includes a liquid ejecting section from which liquid is ejected. A return passage has a first end connected to a supply passage at a first location and a second end connected to the supply passage at a second location. The second location is positioned closer to the liquid ejecting section than the first location. The return passage and the supply passage constitute a circulating passage. A pump can cause fluid to flow through the circulating passage. A replaceable filter unit is a portion of the return passage. A discharge passage through which the fluid is discharged to the outside is connected to the return passage. An inflow controller can suppress external fluid from entering the discharge passage.

The ink composition contains a water-soluble dye and a polyhydric alcohol with a normal boiling point of 270° C. or above, with the percentage of the polyhydric alcohol being 26.0% by mass or less of the total amount of the ink composition.
