Cover assembly for an airbag module

An airbag cover assembly of an airbag module has a molded housing cover and a thin leather or imitation outer cover. The molded housing cover is configured for attachment to the airbag module. The housing cover has an outer surface and an inner surface. The inner surface has a plurality of tear seams arranged to break along a predetermined path. The thin leather or imitation leather outer cover is glued or otherwise affixed directly onto the outer surface of the housing cover. The leather or imitation leather outer cover has a generally uniform thickness devoid of tear seams. The thin leather or imitation outer cover has a thickness of less than 1.0 mm, preferably 0.6 mm. The outer cover is constructed from three separate pieces stitched together with threads longitudinally along a curved arc.

Emblem (20) includes light source section (31) disposed between emblem body (32) and cover main body portion (19). Non-transmitting body (43) includes pin (51) which is inserted into opening portion (28) formed in the cover main body portion (19). Pin (51) is held on a rear surface side of cover main body portion (19), and thus, transmitting body (42) and light source section (31) are attached to cover main body portion (19) by non-transmitting body (43).

The thin-walled portion has a first plate thickness portion and a second plate thickness portion that is thinner than the first plate thickness portion. The second plate thickness portion is formed in the lower portion region of the design region.

Airbag covers having emblems and related methods. In some implementations, a fastening member comprising an elongated axis may be inserted through an opening formed within an airbag cover. The fastening member may comprise a cross-sectional shape that is substantially smaller in area along at least a portion of the fastening member than a cross-sectional shape of the opening adjacent to the fastening member such that open space is left between the fastening member and a portion of the airbag cover defining the opening. The fastening member may then be reshaped such that the cross-sectional shape of the fastening member within the opening changes to decrease the open space and secure the emblem to the airbag cover.
