The knee airbag unit (10) comprises an airbag module (12), which has a module holder (14), a gas generator (16) and a flexible, non-inherently rigid module housing (18) that at least partially surrounds the gas generator (16) and the airbag in the untriggered state, wherein the gas generator (16), the airbag and the flexible module housing (18) are fastened to the module holder (14). Also provided is a cover (20) forming a module covering and defining an outer side in the installed state of the knee airbag unit (10), which is connected to the airbag module (12). Furthermore, there is an edge-side means (26) securing the cover (20) against lowering, originating from the module holder (14).

For inserting the airbag package (14) into the wrapping (20) an intermediate cover made of a coherent piece of fabric is used into which the airbag package (14) is wrapped along with the inflator (18). The subassembly consisting of the intermediate cover, the airbag package (14) and the inflator (18) is inserted into the wrapping (20). Subsequently, the intermediate cover is removed from between the wrapping (20) and the airbag package (14) again.

The protruding region protrudes from a circumferential wall of the case partially. The protruding region includes a stopper wall that is opposed to the connector as stored in the case in the axial direction of the inflator, and a pair of limiting walls that are engageable with the wire harness by the leading ends and thus limit an angle range with respect to the inflator body within which the wire harness is rotatable. The limiting walls each extend from the stopper wall and are disposed on both sides of the connector in the direction orthogonal to the axial direction of the inflator.

The outer surface is inscribed by a hinge groove following a chord path bisecting the outer surface of the deployment door and configured to bend in response to an edge of the deployment door impacting the windshield. The impact force against the windshield is reduced while stiffness of the door against the air bag remains high to facilitate tearing open of the door by the air bag.

An airbag includes a body, an insert opening and a flap member which covers the insert opening from inside of the airbag. A retainer is inside the airbag, and an inflator is inserted into a holding section of the retainer via the insert opening such that the root end protrudes from the insert opening. The flap member entirely covers the insert opening of the airbag body as unfolded and is joined to the airbag body, with a continuous seam, by the circumferential edge except the leading edge disposed towards the leading end of the inflator. The flap member thus covers the holding section. The retainer includes an open region which exposes an outer periphery of the inflator towards the flap member, and the leading edge of the flap member is positioned to be pressed against the outer periphery of the inflator via the open region at airbag deployment.

A mounting element (1) for vehicle-side assembly of an airbag module (100) is suggested with at least one mounting plate (3) adapted to be mounted on the vehicle side which in its plate plane (E) can be non-rotatably coupled to an airbag (2), wherein the mounting plate (3) includes an extension (4) through which the mounting element (1) can be fixed, perpendicularly to the plate plane (E), non-rotatably to the airbag (2) or to a retaining element (9) maintaining the latter in its folded state. Furthermore, an airbag module (100) is suggested with an airbag (2), an inflator for providing inflating gas for the airbag (2) and at least one mounting element (1) according to the invention. Furthermore, a vehicle occupant restraint system is suggested comprising the airbag module (100) as well as comprising at least one sensor unit for detecting circumstances which trigger a case of activation of the inflator and comprising an electronic computing unit for defining the case of activation based on the circumstances detected by the sensor unit.
