Damper assembly for steering column

A steering column assembly including a column assembly, a follower assembly, and a cam assembly is provided. The column assembly may be secured to a mount bracket defining a cavity and may include a column housing and a translatable steering column disposed within the column housing. The follower assembly may include a follower mechanically coupled to a lever for rotational movement. The cam assembly may include a cam mechanically coupled to the steering column and arranged for mechanical communication with the follower. The follower and the cam may be arranged with one another upon a shaft such that actuating the lever in a first direction spaces the follower and the cam from one another relative to a shaft axis to generate a clamp load to retain the translatable steering column in position.

STEERING COLUMN FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE

A steering column may include an actuating unit with a steering spindle rotatably mounted about its longitudinal axis in a casing tube, a support unit in which the actuating unit can be received, and an energy absorbing device that includes a transmission element that is supportable on the support unit and an energy absorbing element secured to the actuating unit. In a crash event, the transmission element is movable in a direction of the longitudinal axis relative to the plastically-deformable energy absorbing element. The energy absorbing element has an elongated hole parallel to the longitudinal axis and into which an expansion part of the transmission element that is oversized relative to the elongated hole engages. The energy absorbing element may be connected to the actuating unit via a securing element that engages in securing recesses of the energy absorbing element and of the casing tube.

The coupling device includes a pin-shaped holding element with a head, which holding element is fixed in a counterholder. An element that is connected fixedly to the transmission device or the actuating unit may be arranged between the counterholder and the head. A second thickness of all the elements arranged between the counterholder and the head may be smaller, in the case of a movement of the actuating unit relative to the transmission device, than a first thickness of all the elements in the case where the actuating unit is fixed relative to the transmission device.

A steering column assembly (10) including the energy absorption strip (40) is also contemplated.
