Structural tape deployment apparatus

A tape drive comprises a roll of a tape that can be extended from a rolled state to an extended state. The tape includes a rigid material that supports the tape and a pliable material disposed at least partially on one side of the tape. A compression roller is disposed on a side of the tape and is biased toward the tape. A drive roller is disposed on the other side of the tape. The drive roller comprises an uneven surface that mechanically engages the pliable material of the tape, without protruding through the tape, as a result of the bias of the compression roller forcing the tape toward the drive roller. A motor turns the drive roller to extend the tape from the roll as the protrusions of the uneven surface of the drive roller mechanically engage the pliable material of the tape as the drive roller turns.

Also described is a compressed coreless rolled product with similar inner and outer surfaces, wherein: a difference between the outer diameter and the inner diameter defining a thickness of at least 2.9 inches; and a ratio of the inner diameter to the outer diameter is at least 0.35. An associated method of producing the product is also described, including steps of: winding an absorbent sheet around a forming core member; removing the forming core member to form a coreless rolled product with a diameter ratio of at least 0.35; and compressing the product.

There is disclosed a method of manufacturing an adhesive tape (32), comprising: printing a print pattern (14) including at least one printed datum (15) onto a web; applying onto the web a plurality of transversely spaced adhesive stripes (16) using an adhesive stripe applicator; and controlling adhesive stripe application such that the adhesive stripes (16) are applied in register with the print pattern (14) by monitoring the transverse position of at least a part of at least one printed datum (15) and adjusting the relative transverse position between the adhesive stripe applicator and the web in response thereto. The method also comprises a tape slitting operation in which, using a tape slitting head (92), the web is slit into a plurality of adhesive tapes (32) which each have an adhesive stripe (16); and controlling the tape slitting such that the web is slit in register with the print pattern (14) by monitoring the transverse position of at least a part of at least one printed datum (15) and adjusting the relative transverse position between the tape slitting head (92) and the web in response thereto.
