PREPARATION OF BITUMEN-CONTAINING ROAD SURFACE MATERIAL
The present disclosure sets out a method for processing bituminous road surfacing material from a road demolition. The bituminous road surfacing material is in the form of break out material and/or milled material. The following steps are carried out as part of the method: mixing the bituminous road surfacing material with water to form a mixture and adding a peroxide and/or a bicarbonate to the water and/or the mixture, in particular hydrogen peroxide and/or a bicarbonate.
Asphalt composition comprising humins obtained from dehydration of carbohydrates
An asphalt composition comprising aggregates and a binder material, wherein the binder material comprises humins, which humins comprise carbonaceous water-insoluble by-products of the dehydration of carbohydrates and/or 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and/or ethers or esters of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The invention also provides a binder material for use in asphalt compositions comprising from 1 to 95% wt, preferably from 5 to 60% wt of such humins, based on the weight of the binder material. The invention further provides for the use of such humins in the manufacture of binder material for asphalt compositions and the use of such humins as binder material in asphalt compositions.
Reclaimed asphalt composition and methods of making and using same
A method of forming a paving composition using reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and/or reclaimed asphalt shingle (RAS) is provided. The method comprises: a) providing a rejuvenated asphalt binder consisting essentially of bitumen, a block copolymer and a bio-oil, wherein the rejuvenated asphalt binder has a rotational viscosity at 135 C. equal to or less than 1000 centipoise, an original G*/sin at 64 C. equal to or greater than 1 kPa where G* is the complex shear modulus and is the phase angle; a G*/sin at 64 C. equal to or greater than 2.2 kPa after aging in a Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO); b) providing a virgin asphalt; c) heating the virgin asphalt to 160-200 C.; d) providing a RAP and/or RAS; and e) mixing the heated virgin asphalt, RAP/RAS, and the rejuvenated asphalt binder under conditions suitable to form the paving composition.
USE OF STEROLS FROM ANIMAL WASTE AS AN ADDITIVE IN ASPHALT BINDER
Disclosed are asphalt binder compositions that contain at least one sterol or stanol additive, or blends of sterols and stanol additives, wherein the sterol or stanol additive is derived from an animal waste or manure source such as swine manure. These sterol and stanol-based additives improve various rheological properties of the asphalt binder compositions showing reduced and/or mitigated aging characteristics.
Bituminous composition solid at ambient temperature
A bituminous composition comprising at least one bitumen base, at least one compound of general formula (I): Ar1-R.sub.1Ar.sub.2 (I), and at least one compound of general formula (II): R.sub.2(NH).sub.nCONHX(NHCO).sub.p(NH).sub.nR.sub.2 (II). The invention also concerns a process for the preparation of said bituminous composition.
GROUND TIRE RUBBER DENSITY MODIFICATION USING ELASTOMERIC POLYMERS
The present invention relates to an asphalt product that comprises an asphalt component and a plurality of pellets comprising a mixture of a ground tire rubber and an elastomeric polymer, where the density difference between the asphalt component and the plurality of pellets is less than 10%. The present invention further relates to a pellet comprising a ground tire rubber (GTR) and an elastomeric polymer mixed with the GTR, where the GTR has a density of less than 1.12 g/cm.sup.3. Also disclosed are methods of producing improved asphalt and paving a surface.
