Curable Compositions for Forming Light Scattering Layers
An information display system includes a pixelated display including a plurality of pixels, each pixel including a plurality of subpixels, an inter-pixel region defined between two of the subpixels and at least one subpixel zone. Also included is an opti-cally-scattering layer in optical communication with the pixelated display, the optically-scattering layer including: a matrix and phase-separated microdomains, wherein the matrix and the phase separated microdomains have different refractive indices and wherein the phase-separated microdomains are disposed in at least one subpixel zone.
Multiphase emulsion polymers for aqueous coating compositions containing little or no organic solvents
A multiphase emulsion polymer for aqueous coating compositions containing little or no organic solvent includes at least one soft phase and at least one hard phase prepared by a multi-stage emulsion polymerization. The hard phase contains a hard phase polymer having a glass transition temperature in a range from 10 C to 100 C which is more than 50 C higher than that of the soft phase polymer. The hard phase is formed as a first stage polymer and the one soft phase is subsequently polymerized in the presence of the first stage polymer. The hard phase polymer includes at least one carboxylic acid monomer and at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer. A method of making a multiphase emulsion polymer for aqueous coating compositions containing zero or low levels of organic solvent is disclosed. Such aqueous coating compositions may simultaneously have excellent block resistance, freeze thaw stability and low temperature coalescence characteristics.
Multi-stage polymeric latexes, coating compositions containing such latexes, and articles coated therewith
An aqueous coating composition is provided that is useful in coating a variety of substrates, including interior or exterior portions of food or beverage cans. The coating composition includes a resin system that includes a multi-stage latex. In some embodiments, the multi-stage latex is formed using a process that includes emulsion polymerizing two or more stages in the presence of an aqueous dispersion including a water-dispersible polymer. In certain preferred embodiments, the water-dispersible polymer is a polyether polymer.
A CROSSLINKING MATERIAL AND USES THEREOF
A crosslinking material, the crosslinking material comprising the reaction product of a reaction mixture comprising: (ii) ≥70% by weight of a cyclic unsaturated acid anhydride and/or diacid derivative thereof by total solid weight of the monomers from which the crosslinking material is formed; (ii) optionally, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and (iii) optionally, an alcohol, amine, thiol and/or water, wherein at least a portion of the cyclic unsaturated acid anhydride and/or diacid derivative thereof is reacted with the alcohol, amine, thiol and/or water, when present; and wherein the crosslinking material has an acid number of at least 100 mg KOH/g.
A CROSSLINKING MATERIAL AND USES THEREOF
A crosslinking material, the crosslinking material comprising the reaction product of a reaction mixture comprising: (ii) ≥70% by weight of a cyclic unsaturated acid anhydride and/or diacid derivative thereof by total solid weight of the monomers from which the crosslinking material is formed; (ii) optionally, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and (iii) optionally, an alcohol, amine, thiol and/or water, wherein at least a portion of the cyclic unsaturated acid anhydride and/or diacid derivative thereof is reacted with the alcohol, amine, thiol and/or water, when present; and wherein the crosslinking material has an acid number of at least 100 mg KOH/g.
WATERBORNE COATING COMPOSITION
The present invention generally relates to the field of cross-linkable aqueous vinyl polymer dispersions, to a coating composition comprising said cross-linkable aqueous vinyl polymer dispersions; to a paint formulation comprising said cross-linkable aqueous vinyl polymer dispersions; and to an article coated with the coating composition or the paint formulation. In particular, the present invention provides an aqueous vinyl polymer dispersion PD which comprises the following polymers: —1) an aqueous dispersion of a vinyl polymer P1 obtainable by free radical emulsion polymerization of a monomers mixture comprising: a) 5 to 20 wt % acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomers M1 or precursors thereof; b) 5 to 25 wt % ethylenically unsaturated monomers M2 containing a polyethylene glycol or monoalkoxy polyethylene glycol moiety; c) up to 90 wt % of non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomers M3 other than M1 or M2; d) 0 to 10 wt % ethylenically unsaturated monomers M4 with a functional group for cross-linking after film-formation; e) 0 to 10 wt % of at least one chain transfer agent CTA; where the sum of the wt. % of M1+M2+M3+M4+CTA=100 wt %; —2) an aqueous dispersion or solution of a vinyl polymer P2 obtainable by free radical copolymerization of: a) from 25 to 95 wt % of a ethylenically unsaturated monomers M5 selected from the group of N-vinyl amides with general structure (I) where R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are alkyl from C.sub.1 to C.sub.5 and may be connected to form a ring-structure, preferably N-vinyl pyrrolidone or N-vinyl caprolactam; b) from 5 to 75 wt % of non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomers M3′ other than M5; c) from 0 to 5 wt % of ethylenically unsaturated monomers M4′ with a functional group for cross-linking after film-formation; d) from 0 to 10 wt % acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomers M1′ or precursors thereof; e) from 0 to 5 wt % of at least one chain transfer agent CTA′; where the sum of the wt. % of: M5+M3′+M4′+M1′+CTA′=100 wt %; —3) a film-forming vinyl polymer P3 under the form of an aqueous dispersion comprising: i) from 20 to 60 wt % of a water-soluble or water dispersible crosslinkable vinyl oligomer OL obtained by emulsion polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising: 1) at least one acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer M1″; 2) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer M4″ with functionality for crosslinking upon film-formation, other than M1″; 3) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer M3″ other than M1″ and M2″, and 5) optionally, at least one chain transfer agent CTA″, and ii) from 40 to 80 wt % of a high molecular weight vinyl polymer P4 prepared
WATERBORNE COATING COMPOSITION
The present invention generally relates to the field of cross-linkable aqueous vinyl polymer dispersions, to a coating composition comprising said cross-linkable aqueous vinyl polymer dispersions; to a paint formulation comprising said cross-linkable aqueous vinyl polymer dispersions; and to an article coated with the coating composition or the paint formulation. In particular, the present invention provides an aqueous vinyl polymer dispersion PD which comprises the following polymers: —1) an aqueous dispersion of a vinyl polymer P1 obtainable by free radical emulsion polymerization of a monomers mixture comprising: a) 5 to 20 wt % acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomers M1 or precursors thereof; b) 5 to 25 wt % ethylenically unsaturated monomers M2 containing a polyethylene glycol or monoalkoxy polyethylene glycol moiety; c) up to 90 wt % of non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomers M3 other than M1 or M2; d) 0 to 10 wt % ethylenically unsaturated monomers M4 with a functional group for cross-linking after film-formation; e) 0 to 10 wt % of at least one chain transfer agent CTA; where the sum of the wt. % of M1+M2+M3+M4+CTA=100 wt %; —2) an aqueous dispersion or solution of a vinyl polymer P2 obtainable by free radical copolymerization of: a) from 25 to 95 wt % of a ethylenically unsaturated monomers M5 selected from the group of N-vinyl amides with general structure (I) where R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are alkyl from C.sub.1 to C.sub.5 and may be connected to form a ring-structure, preferably N-vinyl pyrrolidone or N-vinyl caprolactam; b) from 5 to 75 wt % of non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomers M3′ other than M5; c) from 0 to 5 wt % of ethylenically unsaturated monomers M4′ with a functional group for cross-linking after film-formation; d) from 0 to 10 wt % acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomers M1′ or precursors thereof; e) from 0 to 5 wt % of at least one chain transfer agent CTA′; where the sum of the wt. % of: M5+M3′+M4′+M1′+CTA′=100 wt %; —3) a film-forming vinyl polymer P3 under the form of an aqueous dispersion comprising: i) from 20 to 60 wt % of a water-soluble or water dispersible crosslinkable vinyl oligomer OL obtained by emulsion polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising: 1) at least one acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer M1″; 2) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer M4″ with functionality for crosslinking upon film-formation, other than M1″; 3) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer M3″ other than M1″ and M2″, and 5) optionally, at least one chain transfer agent CTA″, and ii) from 40 to 80 wt % of a high molecular weight vinyl polymer P4 prepared
COMPOSITION COMPRISING SELF-STRATIFYING AMPHIPHILIC JANUS PARTICLES
The disclosure relates to a composition comprising amphiphilic Janus particles and a waterborne binder, wherein the particles are self-stratified, and methods of making and using the same. The disclosure also relates to the synthesis of amphiphilic Janus particles.
(METH)ACRYLIC ESTER COPOLYMER AND CURABLE COMPOSITION CONTAINING THE SAME
Provided is a (meth)acrylic ester copolymer (B) having a reactive silicon group represented by the following formula (1): —SiR.sup.5.sub.cX.sub.3-c (1). R.sup.5 is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, X is a hydroxy group or a hydrolyzable group, and c is 0 or 1. A monomer component of the copolymer includes a (meth)acrylic ester (b1), a (meth)acrylic ester polymer (b2) having more than one (meth)acryloyl groups per molecule, and a chain transfer agent (b3) having a mercapto group. The monomer component further includes a monomer (b4) having a reactive silicon group and a polymerizable unsaturated group, and/or the chain transfer agent (b3) having a mercapto group further has a reactive silicon group.
(METH)ACRYLIC ESTER COPOLYMER AND CURABLE COMPOSITION CONTAINING THE SAME
Provided is a (meth)acrylic ester copolymer (B) having a reactive silicon group represented by the following formula (1): —SiR.sup.5.sub.cX.sub.3-c (1). R.sup.5 is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, X is a hydroxy group or a hydrolyzable group, and c is 0 or 1. A monomer component of the copolymer includes a (meth)acrylic ester (b1), a (meth)acrylic ester polymer (b2) having more than one (meth)acryloyl groups per molecule, and a chain transfer agent (b3) having a mercapto group. The monomer component further includes a monomer (b4) having a reactive silicon group and a polymerizable unsaturated group, and/or the chain transfer agent (b3) having a mercapto group further has a reactive silicon group.
