A display panel may have a first region and a second region encircled by the first region. The display panel may include first substrate, second substrate, sealant, conductive layer, and display medium layer. The first substrate may have a first recess in the first region. The second substrate may be disposed opposite to the first substrate. The sealant may be disposed between the first and second substrates, and may be received by the first recess. The conductive layer may be disposed on the first substrate, cover the first recess in a conformal manner, and be interposed between the first substrate and the sealant. The display medium layer may be disposed between the first and second substrates and may be encircled by the sealant. A thickness of the sealant may be larger than a distance between the first substrate and the second substrate in the second region.

A liquid crystal display device having excellent liquid crystal vertical alignment properties, good transparency when a voltage is applied and good scattering properties when no voltage is applied, and good adhesion with the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal layer formed by irradiating and curing with ultraviolet rays a liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystal and a polymerizable compound disposed between a pair of substrates provided with electrodes, and at least one of the substrates is provided with a liquid crystal alignment film to vertically align a liquid crystal. The liquid crystal composition contains a compound represented by the formula [1], and the liquid crystal alignment film is obtained from a liquid crystal alignment treating agent containing a polymer having a side chain structure represented by the formula [2-1] or formula [2-2], and a side chain structure represented by the formula [3].

A liquid crystal display device includes a TFT substrate having a first alignment film and an opposing substrate having a second alignment film with liquid crystals sandwiched therebetween. One of the first and second alignment films, comprises a first polyimide produced via polyamide acid ester containing cyclobutane as a precursor and a second polyimide produced via polyamide acid as a precursor. The polyamide acid has a higher polarity than that of the polyamide acid ester. The one of the first and second alignment films is responsive to photo-alignment. A first side of the one of the first and second alignment films is adjacent to the liquid crystals, and a second side thereof is closer to one of the TFT substrate and the counter substrate than the first side. The first side contains more of the first polyimide and less of the second polyimide than the second side.

A liquid crystal panel includes substrates, a liquid crystal layer between the substrates, a spacer provided on an opposite surface of one of the substrates, and an alignment film provided on an opposite surface of another substrate. The display surface is curved around a curved axis or formed to be bendable around the curved axis, and the spacer directly or indirectly abuts on the alignment film provided on the opposite surface of the other substrate. The alignment film is a horizontal alignment film that contains a polymer having an alkylene chain structure having two or more carbon atoms in a main chain and allows liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer to be aligned horizontally to the alignment film, and in the alignment film provided on the opposite surface of the other substrate, the polymer is aligned such that the alkylene chain structure extends parallel to the curved axis.
